2011 Breeders Cup Entries: 3 Horses to Play over Uncle Mo in the Classic
Whether or not you want to consider Uncle Mo as a surprise favorite, his odds are far from exciting to bet on.
The two-year-old colt has had a long road back from his rare liver ailment that caused him to miss the Triple Crown run, but he's in over his head in this race.
He drew post 12 this morning and the opening line was set a 5-2. With Johnny Velazquez riding in the saddle there is a good chance of him making something of his position.
But he's never run one-and-a-quarter miles before, and he hasn't won past 11/16 miles this year either.
None of these horses are sure-fire bets, evidenced by Mo's favoritism on the early line, but here are three horses you could play over the current favorite.
Havre de Grace (3-1)
The No. 2 horse in the opening line, the four-year-old filly has already knocked off a few boys at this year's Saratoga’s Grade I Woodward Stakes.
Ramon Dominguez will be in the saddle aboard her again and they'll be breaking from the post 10.
Unless Dominguez lets the pace get too far ahead of her, she's got a good shot to stick with things in this race.
Whether or not she has enough to win (she's finished second twice at this distance this year) remains to be seen.
Stay Thirsty (6-1)
Riding from post 9, Stay Thirsty will feature Javier Castellano in the saddle.
This horse, stablemate of Uncle Mo's, has proven he can party at a mile-and-a-quarter before and should at least factor in this race.
His speed will be something to watch and he could easily be the one to pull off the victory on race day.
Game on Dude (10-1)
It is hard to ignore a Bob Baffert horse.
Riding from post 8 with Chantal Sutherland in the saddle, this horse should also be a factor, at least in the early going.
Like Stay Thirsty, Game on Dude is a speed horse who shouldn't be affected by much other than what he can bring to the track.
