Ohio State Football: Could the Buckeyes Be BCS Bound in 2011?
Don’t call it a comeback, but Ohio State is now on a two-game winning streak, and it should have been a third over Nebraska.
They sit at 2-2 in the Leader’s division of the Big Ten, with a win over fellow 2-2 team Wisconsin.
With just Penn State and Michigan posing real threats the rest of the year, could the Buckeyes run undefeated? If so, would they be able to beat the Legend’s winner and head to the Rose Bowl?
It would certainly be an amazing feat, but considering how well their defense has played and the offensive burst Dan “Boom” Herron has given them, it is a very realistic possibility.
Herron has rushed for over 100 yards in both of the games he played in, and Braxton Miller has developed in every facet of the game. Meanwhile, Penn State has failed to impress despite winning eight games, and the Buckeyes were able to stop Denard Robinson easily last season.
So, assuming they beat those teams, they would also need Penn State to lose another game to play in the Big Ten Championship. But the Nittany Lions still have to play Nebraska and Wisconsin. They’ll almost certainly lose one of those games, namely the one at Wisconsin.
At that point, the Buckeyes would have wins over both divisional front runners and would likely be the highest ranked.
Then, Ohio State would have to play either Michigan, Nebraska or Michigan State in a rematch for the Big Ten title.
On a neutral field with a healthy Braxton Miller, I’d take Ohio State over the Huskers and with Dan Herron providing an offensive spark. I’d also take the Buckeyes over the Spartans. And in order to even be considering this as a possibility, the Buckeyes will have to have beaten the Wolverines already, so they should be able to do it again.
It sounds crazy for a team that isn’t ranked to be a serious contender for a Big Ten Championship, but that is exactly what Ohio State has become following their upset win over Wisconsin.
