Boise State Football: How Many Teams Should Get a Title Shot before Boise Does?
It seems like every year that Boise State has caused a national conundrum when it comes to the national championship game. They went undefeated in three of the last five seasons and are on pace to hit that mark again this year.
Going undefeated in college football is incredibly difficult but the Broncos have yet to reach the national championship because other teams have gone undefeated from better conferences.
As of Week 10, it looks like that could happen again but not nearly on the scale of 2009 when there were six undefeated teams heading into the final week of the season.
Alabama takes on LSU in a battle of perfect teams; Stanford has to get by Oregon and Notre Dame; Oklahoma State has to get by Oklahoma, Kansas State and Texas Tech; and Houston will never do enough to bypass Boise because they have yet to beat a team over .500 percent.
According to the BCS Poll right now, Stanford and Oklahoma State would both get into the national championship game before Boise but neither of those teams play any defense—in their two games against teams over .500 percent, the Cardinal gave up 862 yards and 69 points.
It would be hard to predict either of those teams to remain undefeated for the rest of the year considering those factors.
The real question becomes what happens to the LSU-Alabama loser. If the game is an instant classic, people will want to see a rematch and with 66 percent of the BCS made up of human voters, that could very well happen.
It becomes even more interesting if the game is close and LSU loses because they have to play No. 7 Arkansas to end the regular season. There isn’t a ranked team left on Boise’s schedule.
Only LSU and Alabama have played well enough on both sides of the ball to warrant playing in the national championship over Boise State and it’s not out of the question that they will be one of two teams undefeated at the end of the year.
Whether they will get a trip to the national championship game because of it is anyone’s guess at this point.
