Javier Hernández: 10 Reasons He Makes Manchester United Better

Karla Villegas GamaNov 1, 2011

Mexican striker Javier Hernández has made quite an impression in Manchester United. His unusual goals and humility have made him one of the team's figures.

As the first Mexican to play for United, "Chicharito" has made a whole nation proud, but he has surely had impact in his team, something Sir Alex Ferguson, teammates and fans know.

Here are 10 reason why he makes Manchester United an even better squad.

At Full Speed

Hernández may not be the fastest Red Devil, but he surely knows when and how to use his speed.

Leaving defenders hanging is one of his specialties, no wonder why he was the fastest player in the 2010 World Cup: Chicharito registered 32 km/h in speed.

With United, Hernández has shown he can move quick without losing track of the net, despite his position.

Discipline Comes First

Chicha, as his teammates call him, is one of the most committed players on the team.

From the day he got to Manchester, Hernández has worked hard to become stronger, something Ferguson has noticed and hailed.

"The boy comes in every morning at nine o'clock, does his gym work on his own, joins in with the players at 10 and then, after training, he practices with some of the other players," he said to ESPN earlier this year.

Thoughtful with Fans

Hernández has also succeeded off the pitch. He's been praised by fans, both in Mexico and England.

Besides being a lethal striker, he's one of the kindest footballers, taking the time to sign autographs and greet the fans.

His impact has been such that there are several sombrero stands outside Old Trafford.

During Mexico's participation in the Gold Cup, Hernández was the only player who stopped and talked to a paraplegic girl in Charlotte.

Fairplay

Hernández hardly ever incurs in fouls.

During his now 15 months with United, the Mexican has only received six yellow cards, all of them in the 2010-11 season (46 games). Hernández has never seen a red card.

This season, he has committed eight fouls in 11 matches.

Love for the Team

Respect and pride are two of the most important things when playing for a team, and Chicharito has them both.

His constant praising of the team and the staff are just the first thing to highlight.

"Honestly, I feel the same as I did when I arrived at United. All that has changed is that I am playing with the best team in the world," he said last July prior to the start of this season.

Moreover, every time he scores he automatically kisses the United logo on his shirt.

Teamwork Over Personal Effort

6 of 10

He may be one of the most successful scorers in Manchester United, but he surely knows how to help the team.

He will run all over the pitch to recover the ball or assist one of his teammates. Besides, he recognizes the effort of everyone on the squad.

Scoring a goal is important, no matter who accomplishes the feat, what's at stake are those three valuable points.

A Great Substitute

Hernández had to earn a place on the team, specially in a position as demanding as the one he plays.

Dimitar Berbatov was going through a great moment when the Mexican got to Manchester, but Hernández worked hard and showed how much he wanted to play.

He scored his first goal in an official match against Chelsea in the final of the Community Shield back in 2010, just 21 minutes after coming in for Ji-Sung Park.

Chicharito has scored nine times as substitute and he takes, in average, 18.3 minutes to accomplish the feat.

Good Results as Starter

After showing how much he had to offer, Sir Alex Ferguson knew Hernández could start a game.

During the 2010-11 season, Chicharito managed to score 12 times when he played from the beginning. He did so in Premier League, UEFA Champions League and FA Cup matches.

This season as starter, he's already scored twice in the Premier League. In average, Hernández scores every 39.3 minutes.

Role Model

Hard work and family values have been one of Hernández's greatest characteristics, making him one of the best role models for kids.

Rio Ferdinand said recently that, "If I was a coach I would tell every young striker that he should take note of how Javier plays."

The manager has also praised the way he conducts on and off the pitch and has highlighted the importance of having his family around.

"The boy wants to be a player and the footballing tradition of his family has helped," Ferguson said.

A Goal Is a Goal

Hernández can score with the foot, the head or even the face. The Mexican knows exactly where the goal is and takes a chance every time he can.

He's been criticized several times because he doesn't make plays, like Rooney or Nani, but he certainly is in the right place at the right time, which is not as simple as it seems.

The result? Scoring in key moments like his latest against Everton or the one he did in front of Liverpool.
