Pedro Sosa: Golden Glove Boxer Fighting for Life After Terrible Car Accident
Pedro Sosa, a 20-year-old up-and-coming boxer, is fighting for his life after being involved in a multi-car pileup on the Cross Bronx Expressway in New York on Sunday.
Sosa and his sister, 21-year-old Jennifer Sosa, plummeted 75 feet off an overpass because of an accident that happened due to freezing temperatures and black ice on the road.
Perhaps most tragically, the two were actually out of their vehicle after the initial accident, checking on the status of the people in the car ahead of them, when an out of control Toyota Carolla slammed into them and sent them flying off the overpass.
Joe Torres, a man who works at a shop below the where the accidents happened, was a witness to the event and heard screaming from the construction site where the two siblings landed.
"“At first I thought we were going crazy,” Torres said, “Then I hear her yelling, screaming at the top of her lungs.”
Torres led police to the site. “I had to bring them down here because they didn't believe me,” Torres said.
"
The two were brought immediately to Jacobi Medical Center and Jennifer passed away there soon after.
Pedro is hanging on for his life as his family and friends are around him in the ICU of the hospital. He is currently in a coma.
The accidents left 14 people hurt and nine vehicles were involved total. It is believed that Jennifer is the only fatality as of now.
It’s a sad day for everyone involved and boxing fans in general.
According to the New York Daily News, Sosa was renowned for his left hook, won the prestigious Junior Olympic National Championships in 2008, was the 2009 and 2011 PAL National Champion and the 2010 USA Boxing National Champion.
By all accounts he is a good man and a family person who is one of the top upcoming lightweights in the country right now. He was scheduled to turn pro this week.
Pat Russo, a trainer who knows Sosa well, told ESPN,
""He's out of the operating room, they're cleaning him up. He made it through." Russo told us that the surgery was to stop bleeding in his brain.
"
Let’s just hope he survives the most important and toughest fight he has ever been involved in.
