5-Star QB Gunner Kiel: The Pros and Cons of All of His Top Contenders
With Gunner Kiel de-committing from Indiana a few weeks ago, the elite QB prospect is back on the market. Therefore, the question now is, who are his top contenders that he is considering?
Well, rumors are running wild as to where Kiel is looking, but I think I've honed it down to a solid four schools. Come inside to not only see who I think those top four are, but also the pros and cons of what they have to offer Kiel.
Here we go.
Alabama
1 of 4Pros:
'Bama always is competing for championships year in and year out. The atmosphere of the program is all football business related and Kiel would be able to firmly surround himself with great talent. Also, he easily would be the highest-rated QB recruit Nick Saban has ever lured to Tuscaloosa.
Cons:
The Crimson Tide offense is not known to light up scoreboards per se. Plus, the offense is really based on a power running game, and the QB to not screw it up. Not sure if this is the best scheme and system fit for a QB like Kiel.
Michigan
2 of 4Pros:
Kiel would easily give Al Borges the type of QB he wants to run his more pro-style offense. Surely, Kiel would have the starting job within the next two years in Ann Arbor. Also, he would join a recruiting class that could be in the top five.
Cons:
Kiel would have to really study the WR depth chart and current WR commitments to see if he would like who he'd be throwing to. Also, does he want to go through all of the compare-and-contrast-to-Denard-Robinson questions?
Notre Dame
3 of 4Pros:
From a scheme and system standpoint, the Irish offense may be the best fit for Kiel. His high school offense is very similar to what Brian Kelly runs in South Bend. Also, I can really see him earning early playing time at Notre Dame; he has family ties to program (his uncle Blair went there) and it's not far from home.
Cons:
The family pressure may not be what Kiel wants, and he may want to carve his own niche. Also, Brian Kelly is clearly overly hard on his QBs, so that may be a negative for Kiel. Lastly, the weather is not ideal most of the time in South Bend, and maybe Kiel wants to to throw in a warmer climate.
Indiana
4 of 4Pros:
Kiel committed here for a reason once, so there must be something he likes about the program. Kevin Wilson has a good history coaching QBs, his brother is already on the team and it's close to home. Plus, he would be the biggest recruit ever to come to IU and would have the program, not just the team, built around him.
Cons:
Well, the Hoosiers aren't football royalty by any means, so winning would be awful tough. Also, he would likely take his brother's job soon enough as starting QB. Lastly, the pressure of being a mega-celebrity and a savior of a program may be too much for him.
