Boise State Broncos: Why Stanford Moving Past BSU in the BCS Means Nothing

Martin SondermannOct 30, 2011

Boise State fanning the BCS shell game is happening once again, and your beloved Broncos are stuck right in the middle.  But, don't you worry, none of it even matters right now.

I know certain media outlets want to make news out of Stanford moving past Boise State in the BCS polls, but who can blame them.  That's how they get a media buzz going on a slow news day.  The fact is, Stanford was going to move past Boise State at some point no matter what, as long as they kept winning.

Stanford took their toughest test of the season so far on Saturday night, and they passed it.  However, not with flying colors.  Andrew Luck did not look like the runaway Heisman winner that so many are anointing him, prematurely I might add, and the Cardinal defense looked suspect.

Stanford still has its greatest test of the season coming up on Saturday, November 12th, when they square off against the Oregon Ducks.  From the look of the USC game, if Stanford does not solve some of those problems on defense, Oregon's potent offense will have a field day.

The Broncos will also face their toughest remaining challenge on their schedule that same November Saturday.  They will square off in Bronco Stadium against TCU.  Now, TCU was thought to be written off as another top 25 opponent for the Broncos, but since losing to SMU, have played extremely well.

The Horned Frogs will most likely be back in the top 25 rankings come game time.  They are currently ranked No. 26 in the in the USA Today poll and No.30 in the AP.   With a win over Wyoming next Saturday, and if the Broncos handle UNLV like they should, the Broncos-Horned Frogs matchup will be between two ranked teams.  If BSU can manage a win against TCU, it will help their strength of schedule and should give them enough clout to stay ahead of any one-loss team in the rankings.

So, mark your calendars Bronco fans.  Saturday, November 12, 2011, will be a instrumental day in this college football season.  If the Broncos stay undefeated, and Oregon exploits the holes in Stanford's defense to take the victory, BSU's chances to play for the title go way up.

The only other team standing in their way would be Oklahoma State at that point.  The Cowboys of OSU still have a few challenges on their schedule including a game against Oklahoma.  It will be exciting to see how it all pans out.

Isn't it truly sad that we don't have a playoff in college football?  This year more than most, it would be extremely exciting and more than a little interesting to see how teams would match up.

However, a playoff system is too practical.  While it might solve matters on the field, everyone knows we just can't have that.  It's way too messy, and some smaller school might be able to cash in on the piles of cash by winning it all.

I think BCS actually stands for "Big Cash Supply," but it must only be big enough for some.
