BCS Rankings Week 10: Georgia and 4 More Teams That Were Screwed
The Week 10 BCS rankings are out, and once again, I have some major gripes with the list.
I think at this point we can all agree that the computers are not the most accurate way to judge teams.
You have to dig deeper than superficial statistics like point differential and the AP and coaches poll.
This week features a couple of teams who dropped a game early on and were immediately forgotten about. As more and more teams lose a game, these teams rightfully deserve to creep back up.
It's not happening to Georgia.
They got off to a very rough start at 0-2 but are now making a strong run through the SEC and have an excellent shot a reaching the SEC Championship.
I don't care how down the SEC East may be...that's an impressive accomplishment.
Here is my case for Georgia, and four other teams that should be ranked higher than they currently are.
No. 13 Houston
1 of 5The Cougars current ranking is one too low.
No. 12 sounds about right for a team with the best offensive stats in the game but hasn't played any formidable opponents.
Yet, they deserve to be higher than No. 11 Virginia Tech.
The Hokies could barely beat Duke and are getting love from the polls only because of past years' success. There is no doubt in my mind that Casey Keenum would absolutely destroy the Virginia Tech pass defense.
Isn't that the point of ranking teams? The team that would win head-to-head should be ranked higher right?
No. 11 Clemson
2 of 5The Tigers were shockingly upset this weekend, but that doesn't mean they have to drop six whole spots.
Clemson was doomed by turnovers, and the defense let them down, but they shouldn't drop below the likes of No. 9 South Carolina or No. 10 Nebraska. Both of those teams don't have the quality wins that the Tigers do (Auburn, Florida State, Virginia Tech).
Clemson is still a very talented team that just had an off week. Tajh Boyd is one of the best talents in the nation, and when you combine him with receiver Sammie Watkins (978 yards, 10 TDs), the results can be down right scary.
One week doesn't erase the fact this is one of the top eight teams in the country.
No. 8 Oregon
3 of 5The Ducks got royally screwed this week.
They were previously the best one-loss team in football, and after another blowout victory, somehow Oklahoma and Arkansas both passed them up.
Can we please remind the computers that the lone Ducks loss came to the No. 1 team in the country in LSU?
The Ducks have the best offense in the country with RB LaMichael James and QB Darron Thomas and are only getting stronger by the week. The defense is giving up 21 points a game and has looked much more disciplined than in years past.
They deserve to be in Oklahoma's six position. The Sooners should be punished further for losing to an unranked at the time Texas Tech team on their home field.
No. 23 Georgia Tech
4 of 5The Yellow Jackets just had one of the best wins of the 2011 college football season.
I was fully on board the Clemson bandwagon and am shocked how badly they were outplayed by the Yellow Jackets.
They are the first team to contain Tajh Boyd and created four turnovers with lots of pressure and terrific overall team speed. The running game is really starting to come alive with Tevin Washington, who ran for a QB school record 176 yards.
Two tough losses to Virginia and Miami hurt, but it's becoming extremely clear that the Yellow Jackets are the class of the ACC's Coastal Division and should be at least three to five spots higher in the BCS.
No. 18 Georgia
5 of 5The Georgia Bulldogs are being completely ignored by the BCS computers.
This team deserves to be much higher than 18th.
The Bulldogs are now 5-1 in SEC play after beating Florida on Saturday. They are an extremely balanced team that doesn't have a single glaring weakness.
The offense is scoring over 31 points per game, the aggressive and opportunistic defense is getting better by the week.
The Bulldogs are now the favorites to win the SEC East, which would be an enormous accomplishment, even if the division is a bit down this season.
With the only noteworthy games coming against No. 22 Auburn and No. 23 Georgia Tech left on the schedule, the Bulldogs are going to win out.
They'll be on the cusp of the top 10 by this time next month. For now, they must complain for not being above extremely overrated teams like No. 14 Kansas State, No. 15 Michigan and No. 16 Penn State.
