BCS Rankings: Oregon and Biggest Snubs in Week 10 Standings
If we didn't have BCS rankings every week, we wouldn't have something to complain about to fellow sports fans.
The BCS rankings have been a source of constant debate throughout the years and have even inspired talk of a possible playoff system to determine the season's champion.
We're getting down to the wire with just a few weeks remaining in college football's regular season.
You know what that means. Debates among fans will get louder, coaches will scream that there's some kind of conspiracy, players will try to weather the storm, and sports writers will try to make sense of it all.
Well, I'm here to stir up college football even more.
Here are the five biggest snubs in the latest Week 10 BCS rankings.
Direct all your frustrations in the comment section below.
WARNING: Some comments may be frightening.
5. Ohio State (Unranked, 5-3)
1 of 5It may seem odd to call a three-loss team snubbed from the BCS rankings, but then you realize the Ohio State Buckeyes just beat then-No. 16 Illinois and then-No. 15 Wisconsin in consecutive weeks.
You also realize that Ohio State lost by just a touchdown against No. 10 Nebraska the week before.
Amid all the preseason distractions and early-season suspensions, the Buckeyes have somehow risen to the occasion behind an interim head coach when they were supposed to be dead in the water.
After their win against Wisconsin in Week 9, they deserve to be in the Top 25.
4. Georgia Tech (No. 23, 7-2)
2 of 5The Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets did get buzzed by Virginia and the Miami Hurricanes, so you can't be too unhappy with their placement, but they also just defeated No. 5 Clemson, 31-17, and there's no way they should be ranked below No. 21 Texas.
I guess that's the biggest qualm I have with the Yellow Jackets' ranking. How does Texas, with a worse record at 5-2, slip ahead of Georgia Tech?
The Longhorns lost to their only two ranked opponents and haven't beaten anyone of significance.
Georgia Tech also has rushed for the second most yards in the nation. That has to be worth something.
3. Arizona State (No. 19, 6-2)
3 of 5In addition to the fact that you have to love Arizona State's defense that is led by linebacker Vontaze Burfict, the Sun Devils are 6-2, with their only losses being a three-point defeat to Illinois early in the year and a defeat to Oregon, which isn't anything to be ashamed of.
They should be ahead of Georgia at No. 18, given they both have the same records and Georgia just beat underwhelming Vanderbilt and Florida by a combined nine points.
To be honest, I wouldn't object if they were ranked ahead of No. 16 Penn State, which has gone 8-1 but haven't beaten anyone of importance and actually eked out many of those victories.
2. Oregon (No. 8, 7-1)
4 of 5Oregon's ranking actually infuriated me more than anything, but at least they're in the Top 10.
Let me first say this.
The Oregon Ducks have done everything in their power to make their way back to the title game discussion after their season-opening loss to LSU.
They've done this despite key injuries, including to running back LaMichael James and quarterback Darron Thomas.
They've rattled off seven straight wins since their opening loss, and their Week 7 victory over Arizona State came without James and Thomas for the majority of the game.
Oregon may be the deepest team in college football.
So, tell me, how on Earth are they ranked below No. 7 Arkansas?
Arkansas was ranked No. 10 heading into Week 9, and after squeaking out a three-point victory over Vanderbilt they jumped three spots.
Oregon, on the other hand, was ranked No. 7 headed into Week 9 and dropped a spot after a 43-28 blowout of Washington State.
Can somebody please tell me the reasoning for this?
1. USC (Unranked, 6-2)
5 of 5I'm this close to pulling the rankings-are-biased card.
That's two Pac-12 teams as my two biggest snubs.
USC, at 6-2, is currently ranked No. 21 in the AP poll because it dropped a spot after a triple overtime loss to No. 4 Stanford.
USC was ranked No. 20 coming into the matchup and now it gets thrown back for that performance, a 56-48 thriller?
Was USC actually supposed to win against Stanford? They should receive a gold medal for almost unseating Stanford.
Although, I'm pretty sure they simply would take a Top 20 ranking.
