BCS Rankings Week 10: 3 Top 10 Teams That Will Be Exposed as Pretenders

Austin GreenOct 30, 2011

The newest edition of the BCS poll was just released, and the bottom half of the top 10 looks pretty shaky. I have little faith in a few of these teams and believe they will be exposed as pretenders by the end of the regular season.

Here are three top 10 teams that will ultimately disappoint.

No. 7 Arkansas Razorbacks

Arkansas is a quality team, but I'm a bit shocked at how highly they are ranked this week.

Yes, they do have two wins over ranked opponents and their only loss was to No. 2 Alabama. But they've been very unimpressive the last two weeks, beating unheralded Ole Miss and Vanderbilt by just eight combined points.

The Razorbacks were on upset alert against Vanderbilt before they reeled off 14 unanswered points. But even with that display, Vandy was in prime position to send the game into overtime.

Fortunately for Arkansas, Commodores' kicker Carey Spears shanked a potential game-tying 27 yard field goal with eight seconds left.

If the Razorbacks are struggling to pull out victories against sub-par teams, they have no shot of winning a BCS game.

No. 9 South Carolina Gamecocks

The Gamecocks moved into the top 10 after beating Tennessee 14-3, their first full game without star running back Marcus Lattimore.

South Carolina suffered a brutal week in the middle of October, when quarterback Stephen Garcia was dismissed from the team and then Lattimore was injured just days later.

They recovered fairly well against Tennessee, but I can't picture them winning against better teams.

South Carolina still has to face Arkansas, Florida and Clemson. I expect them to lose at least two of those games.

No. 10 Nebraska Cornhuskers

The Cornhuskers improved to 7-1 this week, but I don't trust Taylor Martinez and Co.

Nebraska is averaging just 160.3 passing yards per game, which 106th in the nation. Simply put, if 105 teams have better passing attacks than you, you probably won't go too far.

The Cornhuskers have two games against ranked teams remaining, both of which are on the road. They take on Penn State Nov. 12, then Michigan the next week.

I think Nebraska loses one of those games, proving they are not worthy of a top 10 ranking.
