LSU vs Alabama: Would LSU Take Nick Saban Back Today?

Chris HumphreyOct 29, 2011

Unless every LSU fan across the world suddenly has amnesia and forgets about Nick Saban’s time in Tuscaloosa, there is no chance he would be brought back to coach the Tigers in Baton Rouge.

While LSU fans despise him now that he is the coach of their biggest rival in the SEC West, Saban had a great run while he was the head man in his five seasons in Baton Rouge.

Following leaving Michigan State in 2000, Saban had instant success after joining the Tigers when he joined the program as their 31st coach in LSU history going 8-4 and scoring a Peach Bowl victory over Georgia Tech.

After two seasons that ended with 10 and eight wins respectively, Saban and the Tigers were able to do something that the LSU program hadn’t done since the late 1950s: win the national championship. In the 2004 Sugar Bowl, LSU was able to hang on to defeat the Oklahoma Sooners, 21-14, in a very partisan crowd at the Superdome in New Orleans.

In 2004, Saban left for the NFL’s Miami Dolphins after a bit of a disappointing season for the Tigers, ending with a 9-3 record and losing to the Iowa Hawkeyes in the 2004 Capital One Bowl, 30-25.

Here is the point in time that I could possibly see Saban coming back to the Tigers when he made his return to college football after being ineffective in his time with the Dolphins, going 15-17 in his two seasons in South Beach.

If Saban maybe had came back to another program that featured a coaching change in 2007 like Michigan with Rich Rodriguez or Nebraska with Bo Pelini or even go back to his home state of West Virginia to take over the Mountaineers instead of Bill Stewart.

But Saban went to LSU’s biggest rival, Alabama. When Saban signed the contract to become the head coach for the Crimson Tide, he burned every bridge he built in his time with the Tigers.

So with that said, we will only see Nick Saban on the sidelines at Tiger Stadium as a visitor, never as a member of the home team.
