Illinois vs. Penn State: 5 Halftime Adjustments the Nittany Lions Must Make
Today's matchup between the Illinois Fighting Illini and the Penn State Nittany Lions has definitely not disappointed through a scoreless but competitive first half. PSU coach Joe Paterno is only one win away from becoming the all-time leader in Division One history and is looking to notch his team's seventh consecutive win.
We should be in for a great finish, but if JoePa wants to get this historic 409th win, PSU must make the five following adjustments at halftime.
Stop the Stupid Mistakes
JoePa and the Nittany Lions have been extremely lucky that their dumb mistakes have not harmed them in the first half. PSU needs to keep the ball in their hands and avoid unforced errors for the remainder of the game. With the weather likely to get worse, Penn State's offense needs to make sure they don't cough up the ball deep in their own territory.
QBs Forcing the Issue
Both PSU QBs need to make better decisions in the second half. Matt McGloin's tendency to force the issue and continue to look for the big play has already cost PSU a field goal. In the second half both McGloin and Bolden must do a better job of being game managers and making sound decisions.
Pound Silas Redd
With the snow falling and field conditions worsening, PSU should continue to pound RB Silas Redd up the middle. The Nittany Lions have quickly turned into a power running team the last few weeks and today's weather should give Redd the opportunity for plenty of carries. With both QBs unable to find a solid rhythm, look for Redd to make a huge impact in the second half of the game.
Third-Down Efficiency
In the second half PSU needs to cut down their third down mistakes. McGloin and his receivers have already missed on a number of easy conversion opportunities throughout this game. If the Nittany Lions want to get the win, they need to stop the penalties on third down and finish the easy plays.
Sound Tackling/ Pressure
PSU has done a solid job of wrapping up in the first half. In the final two quarters they need to continue to suffocate Illinois' offense, keep heavy pressure with the front four and make big tackles in the open field.
