Everton vs. Manchester United: Red Devils Will Rebound with Win over Toffees

Josh MartinOct 28, 2011

A storm is brewing at Goodison Park, one that will send Everton spiraling into defeat at the hands (and feet) of a manically-motivated Manchester United side ready to exact revenge on whoever is unfortunate enough to cross their path.

The Red Devils, or rather the ones who sat a 3-0 victory over Aldershot Town in Carling Cup play on Tuesday, are still smarting from Sunday's 6-1 Derby Day embarrassment against Manchester City at Old Trafford. The loss was Man U's third decision without a victory in their last four in English Premier League play, with 1-1 draws against Liverpool and Stoke City peppered in, and dropped them five points behind City for the top of the table.

Many of Sir Alex Ferguson's top players, including Wayne Rooney, Nani, Chicharito, Danny Welbeck, Rio Ferdinand and Ryan Giggs, will be well-rested and ready to return the club to their earlier form, when they ripped through their early league fixtures with the greatest of ease and a heavy dose of style and energy for good measure.

The same cannot be said for Everton. Toffees boss David Moyes took a risk by running out a strong starting XI against Chelsea in their mid-week Carling Cup match. He was rewarded with the insult of a 2-1 defeat in extra time, on top of the injury of losing skipper Phil Neville to a hamstring strain, Tim Cahill to the recurrence of a previous knock and Royston Drenthe to a red card.

All three figure to miss Saturday's tilt with Man U, thereby throwing this mismatch even further in the Red Devils' favor while leaving Everton squarely in the middle of the EPL table.

Then again, picking up three points may not be as much of a walk in the (Goodison) park for United as it may seem. Ashley Young is nursing a toe injury, while Rooney has had difficulty in the past maintaining his level of play—not to mention his temper—when playing against his former club away from Manchester.

Even if Young has to sit and Rooney isn't on top of his game, Man U still have too much depth, too much talent and too much to prove after last weekend's debacle to not come away with three points and a nice boost to their goal differential on the season.
