Arsenal Transfer Talk: 4 Strikers Arsene Wenger Should Be Looking At
While Robin Van Persie continues to play savior for the Gunners by knocking in goals, there is some thought that Arsenal should invest in a new striker in the January window.
Though Arsenal already has two other players for the position and a third, Theo Walcott, calling for his chance, one can never have too many options at the top level. In truth, there are a variety of factors as to why Arsenal could use another striker.
Marouane Chamakh may end up leaving, whether in January or in the summer, as he continues to under-perform. Chu Park Young is still an unknown, though if his strike against Bolton on Tuesday says anything it is that he will get better and could potentially quell any doubt as to whether a new transfer is needed.
Theo Walcott may eventually get his chances to lead the line but his current first position is on the wings. Lastly, Robin Van Persie himself may not be playing in his best position though he is the best person on the team for the position.
A real out-and-out striker, or a striker who can get into the double-digits consistently, may reduce some pressure on the Dutchman and increase Arsenal's chances for success.
Regardless, this is all dependent on the thoughts of a certain Arsene Wenger, but if he were to consider a new man for his forward line, here are some options.
Moussa Sow
1 of 4Arsene Wenger could dip into the Lille pond for a second time or possibly third if you consider Eden Hazard.
Moussa Sow has attracted the attention of a number of big clubs, and while signing him in January may be tough, by next summer, he should be more than willing to move on to the Emirates.
Sow is strong enough to hold his own with tough central defenders but also quick enough with his movement to really blend with the Arsenal style of play.
Last year he played in a system similar to Arsenal while at Lille and scored an impressive 25 goals in 36 league games last season. So far this season he has seven goals in 14 games in all competitions.
He would be re-united with former teammate Gervinho, who surely assisted on a number of those goals and with the likes of Jack Wilshere, Mikel Arteta, Aaron Ramsey and Robin Van Persie providing service, Sow could be a valuable asset for the Gunners.
Stevan Jovetic
2 of 4Stevan Jovetic is another creative forward similar to Robin Van Persie. The young Montenegrin player can both score and create goals as evidenced by his double-digit tally in both areas in the 2009/10 season with Fiorentina.
So far this season he has contributed five goals and two assists in nine games after recovering from a season ending injury in the previous campaign.
While it may be preferable for some fans that Arsenal look for an out-and-out striker, Jovetic's incredible technical skill and his general style of play would fit into Arsenal in such a way that more goals would surely come.
Both he and Robin Van Persie could switch off in the second striker role, and with their movement and vision, Arsenal could be a very dynamic attacking force.
Lucas Barrios
3 of 4Lucas Barrios is another option in the more traditional striker mold. The Paraguayan has not featured too much for Borussia Dortmund so far, having just recovered from injury, and it is evident the German side misses him.
Since arriving in Germany, Barrios has achieved double digits in goals in both seasons at Dortmund. In 2009/10 he scored 23 goals while adding six assists in all competitions, and last year he hauled in 21 goals and 10 assists.
Barrios may not be as agile as Moussa Sow or as creative as Stevan Jovetic but he scores goals. Like Sow, he has enough strength to handle playing up the top alone and while he benefited from playing with the likes of Mario Gotze, his output can surely increase with the Arsenal playmakers around him.
Hulk
4 of 4Unfortunately, price alone may rule Hulk out of the equation but let's suppose it doesn't. Hulk is a powerful forward with a knack for the special goal, he is Brazilian after all.
Hulk is a bit more versatile like Jovetic, as he can go out to play on the wings, but he is still more of an out-an-out striker. Last season was by far his best in Europe with a tantalizing haul of 36 goals and 26 goals in all competitions last season.
There is no doubt he was helped by the creative style of play imparted upon the team by former coach Andre Villas-Boas, and also the presence of Colombian forward Rademel Falcao. He should be able to fit into this Arsenal squad and style of play successfully.
Hulk is definitely has the physique to stand up to the Premier League, not something that can be said about a lot of Brazilians, and he would provide that direct approach that Arsenal need at times.
