Week 8 Waiver Wire: Roy Helu and 4 Gambles Who Will Pay off

Nicholas GossOct 27, 2011

Another week of fantasy football is almost here, and with the second half of the NFL season fast approaching, it's important to have a deep roster for the the playoffs.

There are several players you must add off of the waiver wire in your league this week, including Roy Helu of the Washington Redskins, DeMarco Murray of the Dallas Cowboys, Bernard Scott of the Cincinnati Bengals and Christian Ponder of the Minnesota Vikings.

Let's look at four waiver-wire gambles that will pay off for you this week and help your team.

1) DeMarco Murray

DeMarco Murray's 253 rushing yards against the St. Louis Rams last week was extraordinary, and even though he won't do duplicate that performance this week against the Philadelphia Eagles, he will likely get at least 100 yards on the ground.

The Dallas Cowboys will want to give Murray 25 carries again like they did last week, and he will prove he wasn't a one-week wonder and has real star potential.

2) Christian Ponder

Minnesota Vikings rookie quarterback Christian Ponder has played pretty well this season, and held his own against the defending Super Bowl champion Green Bay Packers last week in his first career NFL start.

He has the endorsement of All-Pro running back and teammate Adrian Peterson, and will also give fantasy owners some rushing yards from the QB position.

Start Ponder this week against the Carolina Panthers, who are a much better matchup for him.

3) Bernard Scott

Cincinnati Bengals running back Bernard Scott will start this week because normal starter Cedric Benson is serving a one-game suspension.

Even though the Seahawks' rushing defense is good, Scott will still get a good amount of carries and is worth a start in place of a star player on a bye week.

4) Roy Helu

With starting Washington Redskins running back Tim Hightower suffering a season-ending injury on Sunday, Roy Helu will see his workload increase.

Helu, a rookie, will share carries with starting running back Ryan Torain, but will still get enough touches to be a dependable fill-in for a player on a bye week.
