Duke Basketball: Mitch McGary Narrows List and Will Make Decision Next Week

Ro ShiellOct 27, 2011

Mitch McGary, the top-ranked power forward in the 2012 recruiting class, says in his recent ESPN blog that he will make a decision next week on his college choice.

At the moment he is "focusing on Florida, Duke and Michigan."

It is so hard to read between the lines on this one. First he admits to be focusing on three schools, but he has not ruled out a fourth.

I haven’t talked to UNC lately, so I don’t know. They’re still on my list, though.

"

He admitted that he was not sure if North Carolina has a scholarship for him or "his boy" T J Warren, after 6'9" power forward Brice Johnson recently committed.

Warren, a 6'7" small forward, currently plays for Brewster Academy with McGary. North Carolina might have shot themselves in the foot with the commitment of Johnson if they could have gotten these two guys.

Though they could always do a UConn who had a player volunteer to give up his scholarship to make room for Andre Drummond.

Duke has missed out on several big men from the 2012 class. Perry Ellis committed to Kansas. Drummond reclassified and committed to UConn.

Alex Poythress, a recruit Duke may have accidentally committed a secondary violation over, recently narrowed his list to Florida, Kentucky, Memphis and Vanderbilt.

McGary gives nothing away in his blog "Mitch's Memos", but he has thought the process through and this is what he said in an earlier entry regarding the Blue Devils:

"To start off, Duke has a lot to offer. They’ve got the Plumlees there, but Miles is a senior and Mason has a really good chance at going pro after this season. Then they’ve got their younger brother Marshall, who is very, very tall and skilled. I think I could go in there and make a great duo with Marshall and we could make a lot of noise together. I love that Duke likes to get out in transition and run too. That’s a big plus."

The 6'10" forward has nothing but positive things to say about all the schools he is currently considering.

He also likes North Carolina because of the way their big men are allowed to run the floor, plus he would not mind playing with Marcus Paige and J.P. Tokoto. Both are already committed to UNC.

Michigan remains an intriguing prospect because he respects Coach John Beilein and their program is on the rise.

However, he as ruled out Maryland, as he does not think it is a great fit for him.
