Floyd Mayweather Wants to Fight Next in February and Then on May 5
Floyd Mayweather (42-0, 26 KO) is itching to get back in the ring as soon as February, before his proposed May 5 fight.
According to an exclusive interview with Fight Hype, Mayweather said the following:
""May 5th is a date that we talked about, but let me clear the record up. I thought about fighting in February actually. May 5th is still the date that we believe we're going to fight on, but I would love to fight in February if it's possible."
"
If Mayweather goes through with fighting in February and then again on May 5, that would make 2012 the first year Mayweather has fought twice in one year since 2007, when he fought Oscar De la Hoya (39-6, 30 KO) on May 5 and then faced Ricky Hatton (45-2, 32 KO) seven months later on December 8.
However if Mayweather fights in February and May, it would be the first time Mayweather has fought three months apart since 1999, when he defended his WBC super featherweight (130 pounds) world championship against Justin Juuko (45-10-1, 30 KO) on May 22 and Carlos Rios (52-11-3, 33 KO) on February 17.
Mayweather's reasoning for wanting to fight in February seems to be a simple one: His fans.
""You know, I just want to stay active and stay busy because the fans say they want me to stay active and stay busy. I'm ready to get back in there and fight in February."
"
Whether Mayweather is fighting for the fans, the money, legacy, or something else entirely, boxing would sure get a boost out of more than one Mayweather fight a year.
My Two Cents
1 of 1Mayweather's latest fights have a trend. His last two victories have come against welterweight world titlist and he's seeking WBO welterweight world champion Manny Pacquiao (54-5-1, 38 KO) for May 5.
He beat Shane Mosley (46-7-1, 39 KO) in 2010 when he was WBA welterweight champion, but he didn't pay the sanctioning fee so the belt was merely stripped from Mosley and not awarded to Mayweather.
Since then, undefeated Ukrainian Viacheslav Senchenko (32-0, 21 KO) has become the only WBA world champion.
Senchenko initially won his championship when Mosley was upgraded to super champion, following his decimation of Antonio Margarito (38-7, 27 KO) on January 2009.
Senchenko has defended his title only three times since he earned it, opting to fight only once a year in his home country of Ukraine, similar to Mayweather.
Mayweather has since changed his mind about world titles it seems, as he collected the WBC belt from Victor Ortiz (29-3-2, 22 KO) this past September.
This could lead to a unification between Senchenko and Mayweather. A battle of two undefeated champions would be an easy sell so long as Senchenko's knockout highlights are played on rotation.
Mayweather's boxing club shirts worn in training have every major sanctioning body written on them; WBC, WBA, WBO and IBF.
Is the ultimate Mayweather plan to unify the welterweight titles and then retire?
Sounds like one hell of plan.
If it's true, good luck!
