Georges St-Pierre and 5 UFC Fighters Who Need to Change Weight Classes
Over the past several years, we've seen the sport of mixed martial arts grow faster than any other sport on the planet.
We've seen some of the greatest fighters of all time come and go.
And, we've seen fighters like Randy Couture who not only dominated two weight classes, but won a championship in each.
There are many great fighters in the UFC today that have dominated their weight class inside and out, and this domination has led fans to demand a change in their respected weight division.
The following slides display five fighters who should drop or jump a weight class.
Let's take a look.
Frankie Edgar
1 of 5While Frankie Edgar has established himself as the best mixed martial artist in the lightweight division, he remains one of the smallest fighters in his weight class.
Since Edgar is on the smaller end of the 155-pound weight class, a drop to the featherweight division would take little effort.
Many UFC fans have already begun to discuss the possibility of seeing Edgar and featherweight champion Jose Aldo square off in the near future. However, for that to happen, Edgar will have to drop a weight class.
Anderson Silva
2 of 5Arguably the greatest fighter to have ever stepped foot on the earth, Anderson Silva hasn't lost a fight in nearly six years.
While there's been talks of a potential superfight between Silva and St-Pierre, it's yet to happen. And with St-Pierre considering a drop to the lightweight division, it would ruin any possibility of the fight ever happening.
Silva, who walks around at approximately 230 pounds, should make the transition to the light heavyweight division.
Josh Koscheck
3 of 5Since entering the UFC in April of 2005, Josh Koscheck has been one of the most well-rounded fighters the organization has seen.
Koscheck, who actually entered the UFC as a middleweight, later made the move to the welterweight division. However, according to MMA Frenzy, Koscheck has requested the UFC let him return to the middleweight division.
With Koscheck being stuck in the middle of the 170-pound division, a new atmosphere could be what "Kosh" needs.
Georges St-Pierre
4 of 5Since entering the UFC in January of 2004, Georges St-Pierre has established himself as arguably the greatest welterweight of all time. St-Pierre has weeded out nearly every opponent possible as he's won 16 of his 18 career UFC bouts.
Recently, there's been speculations of St-Pierre possibly dropping to the lightweight division as the cut wouldn't be overly difficult.
After dominating the 170-pound weight class for nearly seven years, it's time for St-Pierre to make the move.
Mauricio "Shogun" Rua
5 of 5Mauricio "Shogun" Rua is one of the most recognized names in all of mixed martial arts.
And, despite being just an averaged size Light Heavyweight, Rua's held his own at 205 lbs. evening holding the title at one point.
But, "Shogun" has been mediocre as of late as he's lost three of his last seven fights. While Rua is set to take on Dan Henderson at UFC 139, another loss could mean a transition back to the middleweight division.
