NFL Week 8 Predictions: Which QBs Will Break the 300 Yard Mark?

Andrea HangstOct 25, 2011

There are three quarterbacks in Week 8 who are sure to meet or exceed 300 yards, and two of them are opponents in the same game.

The New England Patriots' Tom Brady and the Pittsburgh Steelers' Ben Roethlisberger face each other on Sunday at Heinz Field. Four of Brady's six games so far this season have featured the quarterback throwing for over 300 yards. Roethlisberger has two games with 300-plus passing yards, as well as one for 298 and another for 280 yards.

The Patriots' bread and butter is the passing game, regardless of how effective they can be on the ground. While the Steelers are far more effective on defending the pass rather than the run this season, the Patriots' two-tight end, Wes-Welker-oriented aerial attack is well suited to take advantage of the flaws that do exist in the Steelers pass defense.

At the same time, New England has one of the weaker passing defenses in the league, allowing quite a few yards and points of their own. Roethlisberger will easily exploit that weak secondary with the help of his speedy receivers Mike Wallace, Antonio Brown and Emmanuel Sanders.

Though the Steelers prefer to keep Roethlisberger's yardage as close to or just below 300 yards if possible, he will need to air it out in a big way if the Steelers have any hope of keeping pace with the Patriots offense. It's the perfect formula for both quarterbacks to end the day with well over 300 passing yards.

The Carolina Panthers' Cam Newton has four games with over 300 yards, though only three of them were achieved strictly through the air. In Week 7, the Panthers beat the Washington Redskins with the aid of both Newton's arm and his legs, with the quarterback throwing for 256 yards and a touchdown and rushing for 59 more yards and another score.

Newton is a threat in the air and on the ground, scoring touchdowns in every game via passing and all but one via the rush. And this week, his team hosts the Minnesota Vikings, a team weaker against the pass than the run, but one who has yet to see a quarterback like Newton this season.

It's easy to predict another 300-plus yard day for Newton when you consider his yardage totals on the year. But against the Vikings, he should easily surpass 300 yards in the air alone. On the ground, another 50-70 yards and a touchdown or two also seems likely.
