Big 12 Expansion: Twitter Reacts to West Virginia's Acceptance into Big 12

Zachary D. RymerOct 25, 2011

As evidenced by the prominent placement of teams like Oklahoma State, Kansas State and Oklahoma, we know that the BCS loves the Big 12. However, I fear that most of us may still be trying to figure out just who the heck is still in the Big 12. Goodness knows there have been plenty of bodies moving in and out of the conference in recent months.

According to a report from the Daily Mail, the next school to join the Big 12 will be West Virginia. It applied for membership to the conference, and sources say it has been accepted.

At the very least, West Virginia's acceptance will ensure that the Big 12 will be able to stay at 10 teams. Texas A&M is leaving for the SEC, and Missouri could very well be following its lead. The Big 12 now has both TCU and West Virginia, both from the Big East, to replace them.

Anyway, when breaking news hits, there's only one place we can get a full picture of the reaction: To the Twitterverse!

When the news first hit, there was some positive reaction. For example, Nebraska Cornhuskers pundit Sean Callahan is a fan of both schools the Big 12 is bringing in:

One can see where Callahan is coming from. You can argue that the Big 12 could have done better than TCU and West Virginia, but the fact of the matter is that the conference is a little desperate at the moment. It needed to bring in schools to save itself, and there are only so many schools that want to join as badly as the Big 12 wants them to join.

But let's not kid ourselves. West Virginia is a very odd fit for the Big 12, and the Twitterverse has definitely touched on that fact.

First and foremost, West Virginia isn't exactly a geographic fit for the Big 12. One college hoops blogger pointed that out quite hilariously:

Famed WWE announcer Jim Ross agrees:

Shawn Zobel of Draftheadquarters.com points out that all these moves don't really make the grade as far as tradition is concerned:

While West Virginia may not be a geographical or traditional fit for the Big 12, Journal Record sports editor Davis Potter thinks the Mountaineers are a good fit for the conference's football philosophy:

As for what will become of the Big East now that yet another school is leaving, the consensus seems to be that the conference is doomed. As per usual, Deadspin gets the award for best headline:

However, it's not all bad. JoeBucsFan wants everyone to know that things are looking up for USF:

My guess is that you get the idea. The deed is (supposedly) done, and there's an awful lot of trolling and LOLing going on. Such is life for the Big 12 at the moment.

As I see it, there's only one way Big 12 interim commissioner Chuck Neinas can address all the naysayers. He needs to come out and say something like this:
