Why Hopeless Tennessee Titans Must Reach Out to Terrell Owens

Marlon MaloneyOct 24, 2011

Coming off their Week 6 bye, the Tennessee Titans suffered through another blowout loss. In the team's last two games they have been outscored by a whopping score of 79-24.

In layman's terms, that's just bad football.

Without Kenny Britt in the lineup, Matt Hasselbeck has put up progressively worse passing numbers from the first three games of the season.

The loss of second-year receiver Damian William, and Britt replacement, to a concussion on Sunday only exposed more weakness in the Titans' receiving corps.

With the way things are going, Tennessee needs to bring someone in to help replace the ability of Britt for the rest of the season.

The top name that pops up for that is the drama-filled Terrell Owens, who will be working out for NFL team scouts on Tuesday.

The Titans have already allowed Brandon Lloyd and any other options to slip away with the trade deadline. Owens is the only receiver left that has proven capable of being a No. 1 receiving threat.

Terrell Owens Gets Results

Coming off a major injury and yet another volatile season, it's tough for even the most ardent fan of Owens to think he will be able to perform at a high level.

With that said, Owens did still put up 983 yards and nine touchdowns on 72 receptions last season in Cincinnati.

Owens has totaled 1,078 receptions for 15,934 yards and 153 TDs in 219 games with the 49ers, Eagles, Cowboys, Bills and Bengals over 15 NFL seasons.

People know that despite all the shenanigans that come with Owens, he does deliver no matter what team he plays for.

Have Arguably the Worst Receiving Corps in the League

When the season was getting started, everyone talked about how Britt was the best receiver Hasselbeck has ever played with.

Without him, this may be the worst receiving corps he's ever had.

The Titans only options at receiver are Nate Washington, who many still believe should be a third receiver, and a combination of Lavelle Hawkins and Damian Williams.

It is a very underwhelming group of guys without Britt, and the highly-touted tight end Jared Cook has not been utilized in the ways many expected this season.

Bringing in Owens is the only way to come close to legitimizing the team's offense, otherwise the team will continue to struggle offensively.

Chris Johnson Is Nowhere To Be Found

Seven weeks into the season, it's too late to say Chris Johnson is knocking rust off his once super speedy frame.

He has 268 yards in six games and, in turn, the Titans have the league's worst running game.

People have been telling themselves he can't be this bad, but at this point there's no other alternative. Forty-four yards a game is horrendously bad.

Johnson's performance to this point in the season has people grumbling for a possible change at the position.

This once proud running team is no more and all the pressure is on the passing attack.

Sounds like all the more reason to add a new receiving threat to the roster.

Defense Is Trending Down

4 of 4

Through four weeks, the Titans' defense was top 5 in almost every major statistical category. But giving up 79 points in just two games will put an end to any of those aspirations.

They have one sack in the same time span along with 396 yards rushing and 553 yards passing.

In the first four games of the season, the team only allowed 56 points against, allowed an average of 87.75 yards rushing per game and an average of 212 yards per game.

The amount of slippage seen in the last two games is reminiscent of last season. The Titans must be able to score more points to keep up with their opponents and to give the defense more rest on game days.
