BCS Rankings: Why Oklahoma Sooners Will Sneak into Championship Game
You aren’t dead just yet Oklahoma.
Like a zombie that takes five shots to the chest but keeps getting up, the Sooners have yet to endure the head shot that would KO them from the BCS National Championship game.
First, let’s get this out of the way…the No. 9 Sooners really blew it against Texas Tech. Losing at home makes it even worse.
Yet, they lost early enough in the year that this mistake can be fixed.
They dropped down to ninth in the latest BCS computer rankings, but can leapfrog almost every team in its way.
With games against No. 8 Kansas State, No. 16 Texas A&M, Baylor and No. 3 Oklahoma State still on the slate…the strength of schedule can boost them past teams like No. 4 Boise State.
Considering KSU and OSU are both in front of them, that’s two more teams that can eat their dust after posting wins.
No. 6 Stanford and No. 7 Oregon still play each other, with the loser falling behind Oklahoma and the winner still having a tough Pac 12 slate.
No. 1 LSU and No. 2 Alabama play in two weeks, yet the loser will still likely be ahead of the Sooners. Both teams still have some extremely hard games on the slate, and then there is the all-important SEC Championship game. The SEC is far from settled at this point.
That leaves No. 5 Clemson.
The Tigers will be favored in every remaining game, and still face a few opponents that will keep their ranking real high. It will be tough to pass the Tigers.
So, in other words, the Sooners need to get lucky, but they can control their own destiny. It’s not going to be easy, but if the Sooners can run the table, they are going to be at the top of the list of one-loss teams that deserve to be in the National Championship game in January.
Saturday was a huge setback, but there still is hope in Norman…especially with Landry Jones and Bob Stoops on your side.
