Suck for Luck: Andrew Luck is the Indianapolis Colts Super Bowl

Travis FarharOct 24, 2011

There were such high hopes at the beginning of the season for the Indianapolis Colts. The team originally planned on making a championship run, ultimately playing in front of their hometown  that is gearing up to host Super Bowl XLVI on Feb. 5, 2012 at Lucas Oil Stadium.

Before the season many fans were discussing the possibility of a home Super Bowl with their beloved Colts the victor. Oh, how things can change in a hurry.

With the news that Peyton Manning was going to miss the season all those aspirations disappeared in an instant. The Colts are off to a disappointing 0-7 start, but to many fans of the Colts that means they are undefeated in the Andrew Luck sweepstakes.

This is a new concept to Colts fans and has taken some time for many of them to fully get on board with the idea, although it is gaining momentum with each mounting loss. No team has started 0-7 and made the playoffs. After the Saints racked up 62 points against the Colts on Sunday, it appears the Colts do not seem ready to buck that trend.

With that sad reality staring them in the face, a growing contingent of the Indianapolis Colts fan base are starting to lose hope in this season and are searching for anything to give them hope. Quite possibly the only good thing to come out of this season for Colts fans may be the No. 1 draft pick.

If the Colts did in fact get the first-overall pick it would be intriguing to see what they would do with it. Based on the comments from Colts owner Jim Irsay, he has eluded that if they had the option to draft Luck they would indeed draft the Stanford star.

However, Irsay has a flare for hyperbole and can never truly be taken at his word. If they choose to keep the pick it would land them Andrew Luck, the most coveted quarterback to come out of college since Peyton Manning. This could lead to yet another 15 years of superiority and it seems like a little too much luck to have this can't miss prospect potentially fall into their lap after having a future Hall of Famer at the helm for the last 14 years.

If the Colts choose to trade the pick away it is speculated they could acquire three first round draft picks, possibly more. This could have the potential to sure up the defense, which has been atrocious. Either way, the Colts could benefit greatly from the No. 1 pick.

They will have the future face of the franchise that can learn under arguably the greatest quarterback to ever play the game. Or they can trade the pick and get some much needed pieces for one last Super Bowl push under Peyton Manning. It almost seems like a win-win situation no matter which way they go, be it short term success or long-term viability.

There isn't much drama for Colts fans in the way of fighting for a division title or winning a Super Bowl. This year fans of the Colts are too busy on Sundays rooting for Miami, Jacksonville, St. Louis, Minnesota, Kansas City, and Seattle to win and secretly against their own team. Indianapolis fans, I don't think it makes you less of a fan if somewhere in some dark place in your soul you are secretly (or in some cases not so secretly) rooting for your team to lose.

After all, Andrew Luck is your Super Bowl this year.
