BCS Standings: Why LSU Should Remain No. 1 in Week 9

Zachary D. RymerOct 23, 2011

My guess is that most of us are probably still coming to terms with the crazy day of college football that we got on Saturday. If you are, don't worry. You're not alone in that regard.

However, it won't be long before we're coming to terms with something else entirely. The BCS standings for Week 9 are due to be revealed shortly after 8:00 p.m. ET on ESPN, and you can rest assured that there are going to be a few changes at the top.

For the most part, these changes will concern how the pieces settle thanks to the losses of soon-to-be-former No. 3 Oklahoma and soon-to-be-former No. 6 Wisconsin. The Sooners and Badgers both suffered upsets on Saturday, and their BCS dreams are up in the air as a result.

Additionally, don't be surprised if we see a change at the very top of the rankings. On Saturday night, ESPN BCS expert Brad Edwards predicted that we could very well see a new No. 1 when the rankings are updated:

If Alabama does indeed climb to No. 1, there is no denying that the timing of the move would be odd. Both Alabama and LSU won in convincing fashion on Saturday, but the difference is that LSU beat a ranked team in the Auburn Tigers. Dropping them to No. 2 now would border on being unfair.

As Edwards explained it, it sounds like LSU could drop to No. 2 thanks to a kind of technical loophole:

If so, well, that's just how the BCS can work sometimes.

This being said, Edwards could very well be wrong. The Harris Poll and USA Today Coaches' Poll were updated earlier on Sunday, and both show LSU at No. 1. Because these are the two polls that are factored into the BCS rankings, the computers would have to do the deed of knocking LSU from the top spot.

If they do, it's going to be very easy to take the side of the humans. They (i.e. "we") can see things the computers can't. In LSU's case, we can see a team that has dominated from the get-go this season, along the way dispatching some very good teams. To date, the Tigers have beaten five ranked teams, with three of these victories coming away from home.

To their credit, the Tide do boast three wins over ranked teams, with two of these victories coming on the road. Nevertheless, Alabama's accomplishments don't quite stack up to LSU's at this juncture, and it's debatable whether or not Alabama is a more dominant team than LSU.

We won't know that for sure until the Tigers and Tide hook up on Nov. 5 for a clash to end all clashes.

Until then, the Tigers should be No. 1. The computers may not agree, but they've earned it.
