BCS Rankings: Which Teams Will Plummet in Week 9 Standings?

Kyle VassaloOct 23, 2011

A fluke Hail Mary ruined Wisconsin's national championship hopes. Both teams in the BCS Title game are going to be undefeated, and all it takes is one play to take a team from a contender to shooting out of the Top 10.

They aren't the only team who is going to be dealt a huge blow in the BCS rankings after a tough Week 8 loss. Here are three teams who will plummet in the Week 9 standings.

Wisconsin

The Badgers were crippled by one of the luckiest and equally epic last-second heaves in history. While it's unfortunate, Wisconsin should have never been in a position to surrender the lead.

Wisconsin was able to score 31 on a top-10 Michigan State defense, but their defense completely collapsed, giving up 37 after not surrendering more than 17 in any game this season.

Wisconsin is still a solid football team, but they missed out on an opportunity to bypass Oklahoma and will instead drop into a grouping with other promising one-loss teams like Oregon and Arkansas.

Auburn

Auburn was actually hanging with LSU there for a minute. Then the wheels fell off and the Tigers went on to route them 45-10.

Auburn was taken down by the No. 1 team in the nation, but they've got three losses now. While their schedule has been horrific, it's impossible to justify having them in the Top 25 with three losses. Their latest implosion is proof that they don't hold a candle to elite SEC teams.

The worst of their schedule is behind them, but unless they can manage to take down Alabama in the last game of the season, they've seen the Top 25 for the last time this season.

West Virginia

West Virginia was blown away 49-23 by Syracuse. The Mountaineers allowed Ryan Nassib to throw four touchdowns and had no answer for Antwon Bailey, who had 125 yards on the ground.

Geno Smith tossed a couple of picks, and West Virginia was shown up from start to finish. No longer is West Virgnia considered a dangerous one-loss team.

This embarrassing loss is going to send them shooting down the rankings and will ultimately force promising bubble teams like Georgia and Arizona State to bypass them.
