College Football Scores: Arkansas Being Exposed as BCS Pretenders vs. Ole Miss
Sitting at 2-4 overall and 0-3 in SEC play coming into Sunday's game vs. Arkansas, Ole Miss was hardly the toughest team that the Razorbacks had left on their schedule.
Still, the Rebels jumped Arkansas and led the game 17-0 in the first half.
To be fair, the Razorbacks have come back extremely well in the second half. They now lead Ole Miss, and appear on their way to a win. Actually, by the time this game is over, this win might be relatively easy.
But that 17-0 start against Arkansas is just alarming, as was the great start that Texas A&M had against them. The fact that they came back to beat the Aggies and are likely going to beat the Rebels isn't nearly as important as the struggles.
Why do I say that?
They still have to play ranked teams in South Carolina and LSU this season. Vanderbilt may not give them much of a game, but Mississippi State and Tennessee are far from pushovers.
If this is how they play against Ole Miss, how are they going to do against those kinds of teams?
Barring some unforeseen developments, Arkansas' only chance at a BCS Game is to run the table. The BCS' rules very clearly state that three teams from a conference can't qualify for BCS games. This comes directly from that site.
""No more than two teams from a conference may be selected, regardless of whether they are automatic qualifiers or at-large selections, unless two non-champions from the same conference are ranked No. 1 and No. 2 in the final BCS Standings."
"
If Arkansas wins the rest of their games, but loses to LSU, there is almost no way that the SEC won't send Alabama and LSU to the BCS.
Right now, there is no reason to be too confident that they will run the table until that game. But even if they do, have they shown anyone enough to think that they will compete with the Tigers?
Arkansas is just not a viable contender to get back to a BCS game. As of right now, they are destined for a mid-level bowl. Quite frankly, I don't like their chances there.
