75 of the Scariest Faces in Wrestling History

David LevinOct 27, 2011

The face says it all.

Happy, sad, scary, intimidating.

Wrestling has a way of mesmerizing people with contorted looks, seething faces and of course scary looking characters.

From the look of the Great Kabuki to the Great Khali, wrestling from then and beyond has made some really ugly, scary and frightening characters popular as both faces and heels.

Here are the scariest faces in all of wrestling.

Abyss

1 of 65

We start with the Monster Abyss.

He has played the heel and face role in TNA.

The obvious brainchild that thought of this character has WWE's Kane in mind.

Besides the mask and the hollow imagery, Abyss loves to fight and bleeds and causes others to bleed.

I guess he is the complete package.

Adrian Street

2 of 65

Scary isn't it?

Street made a name for himself for prancing around in the ring, feuding with the likes of Dusty Rhodes and had a freakishly weird valet in Miss Linda.

Images of him still freak me out.

Albert

3 of 65

Big dude. Had some success in the WWE as a tag team partner of Test and was introduced by Trish Stratus.

We thank him for that.

Lots of hair. Lots of piercings. Lots of menacing looks.

Angelo Mosca

4 of 65

King Kong Mosca came to fight.

Every night, the Canadian star inflicted pain on his opponents.

Just looking at his face you knew you were going to get hurt in the ring.

Awesome Kong

5 of 65

You mess with her and see what happens.

There has never been a more intimidating looking woman than Awesome Kong/Karma in wrestling.

Big, strong, powerful and someone who could kick CM Punk's ass.

She is not in the business now due to pregnancy, but when she comes back, all hell will probably break loose again.

Bam Bam Bigelow

6 of 65

Mean and tattooed.

Only a mother could love this face.

Bigelow was a brawler and did quite well in the NWA, WCW and ECW.

But the tattoos are enough to frighten the strongest of people.

Barbarian

7 of 65

He is one if the underrated wrestlers of his generation.

Teaming with Meng and the Warlord, he was a awesome tag team wrestler who could have made it on his own as a singles competitor.

Big, strong and powerful.

And face paint to copy the Road Warriors.

Boogeyman

8 of 65

This guy was just gross and strange at the same time.

A true Halloween character in Vince McMahon's circus.

His look must have put fear in many children.

Chyna

9 of 65

Manish, muscular, huge. Where do you want to start?

When Chyna burst on the scene, her look was scary. She was more powerful than must men and then she toned it down.

She posed for Playboy, she continued to wrestle and she became a force in the WWF.

She still has an intimidating look to her.

Crazy Luke Graham

10 of 65

What a face.

He was a heel in the 1970s in the WWF with brothers Jerry and Eddie.

He always appeared to be off a bit and his style was a little off as well, which the fans either liked or disliked,

Crowbar

11 of 65

Had a brief stay in WCW and has wrestled in other organizations.

A little animated, a little crazy and very unorthodox in style.

He would have been great as a member of Raven's Flock.

Crusher

12 of 65

A menace during the golden age of wrestling.

He and Dick the Bruiser caused all kinds of hell in the Midwest and Great Lakes.

His look is one that stopped wrestlers cold in their tracks.

Curtis Iaukea

13 of 65

A scarred forehead was a trademark.

He spent time in the WWWF and other promotions,

He was popular wrestler of the 1960s and 1970s.

Daffney

14 of 65

Yes her look is somewhat scary, but tats and a dark look is also sexy as hell.

Daffney is an indy female wrestler who spent time in WCW, TNA and ECW.

Her style is one that makes people look twice.

Demolition

15 of 65

Their act was great. Ax, Smash and Crush beat the hell out of everyone in the WWF.

They were a take off of the Road Warriors (wasn't everyone) and were the lead tag team in the WWF before the "Attitude Era" began.

Doink the Clown

16 of 65

I put him on here because his look frankly scares me.

Clowns have a way of doing that.

Matt Bourne was this character for a while in the WWF and then was portrayed by others.

He has a decent run but never really moved up the WWF ladder.

Fritz Von Erich

17 of 65

The big Texan developed the German Nazi persona when he wrestled in the NWA and was a major heel, flashing his famed "claw" all over the country.

Von Erich played the role well and had fans yelling and screaming at him in gyms when he got in the ring.

Upon retiring, he promoted his five sons, built an empire in Texas and was beloved by fans across the state of Texas.

Gangrel

18 of 65

One of the origianl Brood with Edge and Christian.

He drank blood, had fangs and just looked he belonged in a Halloween Movie.

His time in the WWF was shortlived.

Goldust

19 of 65

He has a scary look purely from the colors and the look.

Goldust was drama in a wrestling ring.

Dustin Rhodes also had a darker side to him, Dark Reign, that he used in TNA.

He is quite the character.

The Great Kabuki

20 of 65

The man from the Orient was brought to the states by Gary Hart to feud with Dusty Rhodes amongst others.

He has colorful face paint and sprayed green mist in the eyes of his opponents.

And his long hair blocked most of the sad or evil look he gave in the ring.

Ivan Koloff

21 of 65

How about this mean looking hairy teddy bear coming at you?

Koloff was a brute and spoke with an accent and was not the most attractive to look at..

But he was all business in the ring.

He was never a face, and in his generation he played the heel better than most.

Warlord

22 of 65

Another on of those wrestlers who could have been great on his own.

A teammate of the Barbarian.

They battled the Road Warriors in the AWA and WCW.

Baron Von Raschke

23 of 65

.He talked in a raspy voice and spoke about how he was going to use the "craw" to beat his opponents.

Von Raschke was nothing to look at in the ring, all out of shape and flat-footed.

But he made name for himself as a heel in the 1970s and 1980s

Viscera

24 of 65

Now he was just plain odd. And scary and huge.

Stop me when you heard enough.

Tats, cold contacts in his eyes and a persona of being possessed.

The gimmick obviously worked.

Vampiro

25 of 65

Criss Angel meet Raven.

He was odd and off the mark and had a following.

And a freak all in one.

Vader

26 of 65

All you had to hear was him talk and then see him with the mask.

He was big and scary.

And that is really all you need to know.

Undertaker

27 of 65

He is so loved and so scary at the same time.

When he sticks his tongue out and then rolls his eyes back in his head, he looks like he is from the dead.

Oh yea, that's what he wants you to think.

Umaga

28 of 65

Tatts, piercings and the hair.

Don't forget the size and his power.

That's Umaga.

A Sumo-style powerhouse who beat opponents into oblivion.

Maurice Tillett

29 of 65

All I have to say is he was the Shrek of Wrestling.

The Great Khali

30 of 65

He did not talk.

He had his handlers follow him to the ring where he was scary in size, scary in power and scary to look at.

And along the way he won the World Title.

Abdullah the Butcher

31 of 65

I don't think I need to say anything.

Everyone knows about Abby.

Kamala

32 of 65

I always liked this "scary" guy.

He was big and agile for his size and when he moved, you thought the earth would shake.

Kamala was main attraction in the NWA and WCCW and was a mid card success in the WWF.

Not bad for a guy who never spoke a word.

Kane

33 of 65

Masked Kane is still the best.

As an evil man from the darkside, the Big Red Machine could be considered scary with his mask on or off.

Either way, he has been a hit in the WWE.

Killer Khan

34 of 65

A career long heel.

He feuded with the likes of Andre the Giant and Hulk Hogan and then moved on to WCCW where he had bloody feuds with the Missing Link and later Terry Gordy.

Killer Kowalski

35 of 65

A two time WWWF tag team champion.

Kowalski was famous in the ring and out.

He helped train Triple H amongst others when he retired.

He was a master of the iron claw.

Jos LeDuc

36 of 65

A tough Canadian wrestler.

LeDuc never backed down from a fight. He had the look of a crazed lumberjack.

A heel in the northwest and Florida.

Lou Albano

37 of 65

Maybe the weirdest wrestler/manager of all time.

Rubber bands attached to his face and the hair and beard.

Frightening!

But Capt. Lou at the end of his career became a crowd favorite, no matter how grotesque he may have looked.

Luna Vachon

38 of 65

Sexy and scary at the same time.

Vachon as almost psychotic in the ring and gave great vignettes about her opponents.

And she usually backed up what she said in the ring.

Mankind

39 of 65

Mick Foley took a heel that was received well in the WWF and made him into a lovable face.

But he still looked scary.

And the use of Socko and the mandible claw was just outrageous.

But it worked.

Mark Henry

40 of 65

Raw power and raw strength.

And what he does in the ring to bigger opponents and smaller ones is just unreal and down right scary.

Moondogs

41 of 65

Odd, scary or just plain dirty looking.

The Moondogs are that and then some.

A main stay in the WWF they were a heel tag team that were odd to say the least.

The Nasty Boyz

42 of 65

Knobbs and Saggs were perfect for the WWF and WCW.

They were loud, obnoxious, ugly and scary looking.

And they were Hulk Hogan's friends, so they got a good run in the 1990s as tag team champions.

Jim Neidhart

43 of 65

The "Anvil" looked like a devil and wrestled like an immovable object.

As part of the Hart Foundation, he found his niche as a tag team wrestler.

The goatee just made him look freakishly scary.

Nikita Kolof

44 of 65

Scary American wrestler who loved his Russia persona so much, he legally changed his name.

Koloff was big, strong and intimidating.

Ric Flair gave him the push he needed to be a star.

ODB

45 of 65

Yes, she is scary.

A take off of trailer park trash in a wrestling ring. ODB is an instant classic.

And the best thing about her (no, I am not going there) is that she can wrestle.

Oliver Humperdink

46 of 65

He paid his dues as a manager in Florida, feuding with Dusty Rhodes, Barry Windham and Lex Luger.

He always managed to get himself caught up in the action.

When he teamed with Kevin Sullivan, there was true mayhem.

Ox Baker

47 of 65

This picture says it all.

He looked like he belonged in a Sci-Fi movie.

I wouldn't want to cross him.

Pampero Firpo

48 of 65

Oh, my!

He looks like Bruiser Brody.

Firpo was a a man who kept foreign objects in his afro and used them at will against his opponents.

He would have been brilliant in a Head and Shoulders commercial?

Papa Shango

49 of 65

The medicine man of the WWF.

Shango looked like was from the islands and was mystical and scary all at once.

And the smoke and voodoo added to his scary appearance.

Psycho Sid

50 of 65

He was crazed, meniacle and had a scared look to him.

Sid was a big and powerful guy in the WWF who used his strength to overpower opponents.

Then he would get that psychotic look to him and he brought the hoouse down.

Purple Haze

51 of 65

Mark Lewin was one of those guys who loved the wrestling life and played it to its full extend.

As the maniac Purple Haze he was impervious to pain and inflected some on his own.

He was also scary looking with the purple outfits and the satanic following of one Kevin Sullivan.

Raven

52 of 65

Odd, I tell you.

The maturation of Scott Levy over decades in wrestling is one you must see for yourself.

He started out as a baby face, became Scotty Flamingo and then transformed into Raven.

He was an ECW original and a creator of great drama.

And his rants were scary all to themselves.

Rhyno

53 of 65

Spear! Spear!

Besides Edge, he may have the best Spear in wrestling.

Rhyno is so big and strong and  he runs right through his competition.

And when he gets worked up, he may even scare himself.

The Road Warriors

54 of 65

Yep, these bad asses were scary.

They came to the ring and beat their opponents before the bell started or never gave up control of their matches.

They wore face paint and spikes on their shoulders and knew they were the best tag team out there.

Sabu

55 of 65

Related to the original Sheik, Sabu was a hardcore legend.

He has the look of a crazed madman and for some reason, he may just have been that.

Sabu, a former NWA title holder, would do anything and usually did to win a match.

The Wild Samoans

56 of 65

It's a good thing they never said anything in the ring.

From what I understand, outside the ring they were lovable teddy bears.

Inside the ring, they were a handful for anyone.

Just look at the scowls on their faces.

The Sheepherders

57 of 65

Three really ugly men.

They were a sight to see and they had some of the craziest gimmicks in wrestling, the way they walked, talked and performed.

Went to the WWF as the Bushwhackers and continued that trend.

The Sheik

58 of 65

Ed Farhat was known for taking an illegal angle or two along the way to earn a win.

He used pencils, chairs, anything on the outside or what he could cover up in his tights.

He was an original and few men fared well against him.

Scary Sherri Martel

59 of 65

Even her name explains her.

When she was done wrestling the likes of Luna Vachon and Medusa, Sherri Martel managed the likes of Shawn Michaels, Randy Savage and Harlem Heat.

She was a great wrestler and maybe even a better manager.

Kevin Sullivan

60 of 65

Even his shoot interviews were scary.

One of the most odd and frightening people in wrestling.

And I think he really believed what he said.

Some of the things he and his brood did in Florida was just down right indescribable.

I'm totally serious.

Tazz

61 of 65

Now he is a good announcer, but Tazz could hold his own in the ring.

He was a great competitor in ECW and then made his move to the WWE where he did no fair as well, but found his way to the broadcast table.

Now, he is on TNA.

Andre the Giant

62 of 65

I know it sounds odd but if 7'4" of man and over 500 pounds looked at you funny, you would be scared too.

Andre was loved by all, even in the end of his career.

But he was still a scary looking sight.

Gorilla Monsoon

63 of 65

Before he was at the announcers table, Monsoon caused all kinds of havoc in the WWF with his size and power.

You did not want to mess with him at over 400 pounds of fury!

Maurice and Paul Vachon

64 of 65

There weren't many wrestlers in the AWA or WWF who were as scary and tough as the Vachons.

Whether in singles competition as a tag team, Maurice and Paul Vachon were all about business in the ring.

Stan Hansen and Bruiser Brody

65 of 65

Two of the meanest SOBs in wrestling. They worked for themselves.

Brody was one of the scariest and toughest ever to wrestle.

Hansen was the AWA World Champion.

Both were independent as they come and could throw it down with anyone.
