UCLA Football: 5 Lowest Points for Bruins and Rick Neuheisel Against Arizona

Jake LittleOct 21, 2011

UCLA put in a horrible performance against the Arizona Wildcats on Thursday night. In a 48-12 loss, the only positive UCLA can take away from the game was the fact that Arizona only scored 48 points.

Compounding the loss was the brawl that ensued at the end of the first half, which saw the ejection of UCLA wide receiver Taylor Embree.

The night consisted of many more lows than highs. The following are the five lowest lows from the Bruins loss to the Wildcats.

Kevin Prince Missing Josh Smith

1 of 5

In the Bruins' first possession, the Westwood outfit found themselves down by a touchdown. On the road especially, it's important to come out firing.

Their first two plays were both runs. Neuheisal's men then found themselves with a critical 3rd-and-6. Prior to the snap UCLA receiver Josh Smith motioned from left to right.

The ball was snapped and Smith found himself wide open down the right sideline. Prince spotted him but overthrew the wide open receiver, and UCLA were forced to punt.

In a place like Arizona, opening with a three-and-out is the last thing any team wants to do.

Keola Antolin 28 Yard Run

2 of 5

With 1:10 left in the first quarter, UCLA were looking sharp defensively and Arizona faced a 2nd-and-11. The Wildcats were on their own 35-yard line.

The home side lined up with three wide outs on the left and quarterback Nick Foles lined up in the shotgun.

The ball was snapped and Arizona running back Keola Antolin busted out a 28-yard run down the right side of the field.

The run extended the drive and put the Wildcats into Bruin territory. Arizona ended up finishing that drive with a touchdown.

Tyler Gonzalez: Missed Field Goal

3 of 5

UCLA found themselves down 28-7 with 6:55 left in the second quarter. A Jonathan Franklin run on 3rd-and-5 resulted in a one-yard loss.

Tyler Gonzalez took the field for his first ever UCLA Bruin field-goal attempt. Gonzalez was the manager of the UCLA soccer team, but he's now the starting kicker due to injuries.

Now, the low point here is not Gonzalez missing the field goal. The low point is the fact that UCLA, a program that has produced some of the best kickers in college football, has been reduced to a soccer team manager.

This is symbolic of where the Bruins currently find themselves.

Brawl

4 of 5

Even the fans weren't taking the game seriously. In the closing seconds of the half, a fan dressed as a referee took the field and proceeded to streak.

After the streaking, Bruins receiver Taylor Embree became involved in a scuffle, and a full on brawl ensued.

Both of the benches were cleared and the fight resulted in the ejections of Embree and Arizona defensive back Shaquille Richardson.

Final Whistle: UCLA 12, Arizona 48

5 of 5

The lowest point of the night by far. A final scoreline that would embarrass any team Pac-12.

Arizona were the worst team in the Pac-12, and UCLA were half a game off the top of the Pac-12 South. Under-performing now seems to be the theme of UCLA football.

The Bruins' performance was shameful. It was the performance of a team that has no desire, and no will to win.

Rick Neuheisal, who was brought in to motivate and compete, seems to have created a team that refuses to do either.
