NFL Picks Week 7: Vikings' Woes Will Have Packers on Cruise Control

Gabe ZaldivarOct 20, 2011

The Minnesota Vikings welcome the Green Bay Packers on Sunday, and they will prove to be the most gracious of hosts.

The first thing we should get out of the way is Green Bay's weakness. Much like Superman turns into a sobbing pile of human weakness around kryptonite, so do the Packers around a team that can pass.

The Packers are cursed with having one of the worst secondaries in the league. The only thing that has helped them is their success against the run and the gaudy numbers their offense puts up.

All of this is to say the Packers can be beat if a team has the necessary tools—the Vikings do not. The Vikings threw any arm they thought would stick against the Bears, another team struggling against the pass.

Nothing seemed to work. It seems the panic button has been pressed as Christian Ponder gets the nod as the starting quarterback.

The only hope is the Vikings can get the running game going because the Vikings will not flourish by air. Ponder was mediocre in the limited amount of snaps he received.

The Packers secondary is soft, but the Vikings aren't miracle workers. Ponder is not going to step on the field and deliver a game in keeping with what Aaron Rodgers will produce.

And isn't that really the hope? Most teams work under the assumption that Rodgers is going to hurt them, but they will work to limit the damage.

The Vikings' issues are twofold as they try to figure out how to get the offense clicking amidst a quarterback dispute.

You can bet that Donovan McNabb will be vying for another chance if Ponder stumbles. That kind of pressure could weigh on the rookie quarterback. Any way you look at it, things look grim for the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday.
