Manchester United sleep-walked through a 2-0 win over Romanian side Otelul Galati on Tuesday in a Champions League Group C "showdown." United didn't dominate the way most people expected, with the hosts holding out for more than an hour.
Wayne Rooney secured the points with two successful penalties. With that, United escaped Romania without being punished for playing a decidedly below-average game.
But take heart, fans of poetic justice!
As a matter of principal, no United player will earn a score of greater than 4.0 in B/R's world-famous post-match player ratings.
Seriously.
Goalkeeper
Anders Lindegaard: 4.0
See what we're talking about? Lindegaard didn't really have anything to do for most of the night. He earns the maximum rating for basically standing around for 90 minutes.
Defenders
Patrice Evra: 3.5
Evra made a few forays into the attack and generally played decently. He and the rest of the United defense had trouble with Livlu Antal all night.
Chris Smalling: 4.0
Smalling didn't do anything to distinguish himself or hurt his rating. So he gets the maximum.
Nemanja Vidic: 2.5
OK, so the sending off was ridiculous. But Vidic didn't have a good night in his return from a long injury layoff. He gave away possession in a dangerous spot in the first half, a lapse that a decent team would have punished. He had a mix-up with Lindegaard later in the half and generally looked off the pace. Still, he didn't deserve to be sent off. Regardless, this was a performance he'll want to forget.
Fabio: 3.5
Fabio didn't get involved much at right back. He was subbed in the second half and didn't look happy about it.
Midfielders
Anderson: 2.5
Anderson looked thoroughly lost in the central midfield despite playing against a vastly inferior opponent. He had no ideas and contributed little creativity to the attack.
Michael Carrick: 3.0
See above. Carrick missed a real chance in the first half but actually seemed interested in playing football. At times.
Nani: 4.0
Nani earns the maximum rating for his strong dribbling and creativity. He and Wayne Rooney were United's best, most consistent offensive threats (though that isn't saying much).
Antonio Valencia: 3.0
Valencia got a chance to play his favored right midfield, but his indifferent performance will probably get him sent back to the defense.
Forwards
Wayne Rooney: 4.0
Rooney gets the maximum rating for actually hustling and trying to create something—anything—in the attack. He even dropped into the midfield in the first half in an attempt to stir up some creativity. His reward was a couple of penalties that he dispatched with aplomb.
Javier Hernandez: 2.0
Oi. Chicharito played a bad game. Usually a fox in the box with a nose for goal, the Mexican international looked completely disinterested and uninspired. He played too deep and rarely got into the box.
