Tim DanielsOct 18, 2011

The Boise State Broncos (6-0, 1-0) are undefeated and battling for BCS respect, which has been a common theme in many of the team's seasons over the past decade. In Week 8, the Broncos receive a visit from the Air Force Falcons (3-3, 0-2), who are on a two-game losing streak.

Where: Bronco Stadium in Boise, Idaho

When: Saturday, Oct. 22 at 3:30 p.m. EDT

Who Might Not Play For Air Force: TE Joshua Freeman (shoulder)

The Falcons only have three players listed as questionable for Saturday's game and none of them have a major impact on the team. While Freeman has just one catch this season, Air Force will need as many weapons as possible to keep up with Boise State.

Who Might Not Play for Boise State: DT Chase Baker (calf)

Baker has been dealing with a nagging calf injury and missed last week's win over Colorado State. He has 10 tackles this season and has been a productive member of the defensive line rotation for the Broncos. Having him available will take some pressure off the other defensive tackles.

Key Storyline: Do the Broncos have any chance at the BCS National Championship Game?

Boise State were ranked fifth in the first set of BCS rankings that were released on Sunday. While conventional wisdom would say there is a chance they could be taking a trip to the Louisiana Superdome in January, their schedule might make it impossible.

Even though the Broncos beat Georgia in Week 1, none of their other 11 regular season games are against ranked teams. It's tough to imagine the system rewarding that lack of competitive games, especially since it doesn't consider margin of victory.

Boise would need to win out and get a lot of help to make its BCS dreams reality.

BCS Implications

Boise State cannot afford any losses if it wants to play in a BCS bowl. One loss to an inferior team, which is all the Broncos have left on the schedule, would send them plummeting down the rankings. And that would be a major disappointment.

They won't move up the rankings without the benefit of a loss from another team. Teams like Wisconsin, who plays Michigan State on the road this week, can leapfrog the Broncos with a big win. Simply put, the Broncos are in a precarious position.

What They're Saying

Yahoo! Sports passes along a quote from Air Force quarterback Tim Jefferson and the senior isn't exactly guaranteeing an upset win on Saturday. Actually, it's quite the opposite.

"

In games against FBS teams this year, Air Force is 1-3 with three mostly uncompetitive losses and a one-point overtime win at Navy. The Falcons now have back-to-back losses against Notre Dame and San Diego State, in which they allowed 100 combined points.

“It’s rough right now,” quarterback Tim Jefferson said. “Coming off back-to-back big losses like this, our confidence isn’t high, there’s no doubt about that.”

"

On the flip side, Broncos quarterback Kellen Moore had a tough time recalling a more complete performance from the offense during his tenure at Boise than last week's destruction of Colorado State (via Blue-Turf.com).

"

When pressed, Moore said it was difficult for him to recall a more impressive overall performance by the Bronco offense.

"Certainly last week was pretty special and pretty neat," Moore said Monday. "The defense and special teams have certainly helped by giving us pretty good field position. But definitely things went really well. We had a lot of explosive plays."

"

Air Force Player to Watch: RB Asher Clark

The Falcons' only chance to keep it close on Saturday is to use their running game effectively and control the clock. Clark leads the team at more than 90 yards per game and eight yards per carry. He could become a household name (for one day at least) if he leads the upset brigade.

Boise State Player to Watch: WR Tyler Shoemaker

Shoemaker is the leading receiver in Boise's high-flying offense with 401 yards on 24 catches. He has found the end zone eight times, as well. Air Force is allowing more than two passing touchdowns per game and haven't faced an offense the caliber of the Broncos'. Shoemaker should have a big day.

Key Matchup: Troy Calhoun vs. Chris Petersen

Boise State has more talent, is heavily favored and should be playing with a lot more desperation than Air Force. With that in mind, Air Force's only chance to shock the football world is if Calhoun formulates a masterful gameplan.

Prediction: Boise State 48, Air Force 14
