Manny Pacquiao and the Top 10 Fan-Friendly Boxers Right Now

First LastOct 18, 2011

It might take a lot to satisfy the average boxing fan, but these 10 boxers provide nothing short of exciting performances every time they enter the ring, and that's something every fan can appreciate.

When Filipino superstar Manny Pacquiao enters the ring on November 12 to face Juan Manuel Marquez, he will be protecting his legacy while still fulfilling the fans' desire to see a great fight. It's a balance that few can master, but Pacquiao does it as the No. 1 pound-for-pound boxer in the sport.

Whether the following 10 boxers win or lose, what is usually talked about is the fight and not the result. These are boxing's best fan-favorite fighters right now.

No. 10: Marcos Rene Maidana

1 of 10

WBA world light welterweight champion Marcos Rene Maidana (31-2, 28 KO) doesn't let his opponents have an easy night even if it appears so early.

He got up from first-round knockdowns in his fights versus Victor Ortiz and Amir Khan to knock out Ortiz and fight to a close-decision loss against Khan.

In a fight with Mexican legend Erik Morales, one of the best action fights of the year, the 28-year-old Maidana won a majority decision.

No. 9: Juan Manuel Lopez

2 of 10

It wasn't too long ago that Juan Manuel Lopez (31-1, 28 KO) was one of the top-10 pound-for-pound boxers in the sport, before a setback versus Orlando Salido in April took away his undefeated record.

Before that major upset, he had beaten Rafael Marquez, Bernabe Concepcion and Rogers Mtagwa in three fights that warranted a fight- or round-of-the-year nomination.

With 28 knockouts in 31 fights, Lopez possesses great featherweight strength that is rarely seen. Only one of his fights has gone to a decision since 2006.

No. 8: Victor Ortiz

3 of 10

Having knocked down every opponent he has faced, former WBC welterweight champion Victor Ortiz (29-3-2, 22 KO) got the biggest fight of his life in September versus Floyd Mayweather Jr.

He was unsuccessful in defeating the undefeated boxer, and the end came after Mayweather threw an illegal sucker punch to knock him out. Shortly before, Ortiz had been deducted a point for headbutting.

At 24, Ortiz still has a lot of time to improve upon his skills, and many talk about him rematching Andre Berto or Marcos Maidana, two fighters whom he faced in fight-of-the-year candidates. The fights had a combined nine knockdowns.

No. 7: Sergio Martinez

4 of 10

It took former WBC middleweight champion Sergio Martinez (48-2-2, 27 KO) over 10 years to become a household name in boxing, and his 2009 war with Paul Williams was more than enough to make him a fan favorite.

After the first fight resulted in a draw, the two had a rematch almost a year later. Martinez didn't let it go to the scorecards this time around and knocked out his opponent in the second round.

Many are calling for him to move up to the star-studded super middleweight division, and his status will only continue to grow if he does so.

No. 6: Michael Katsidis

5 of 10

Everyone always looks for the next Arturo Gatti, and former lightweight champion Michael Katsidis (28-4, 23 KO) has proven on more than one occasion that he is that guy.

While he might never beat the best of the best, he will always put up a good fight. He knocked down both Joel Casamayor and Juan Manuel Marquez before losing by knockouts late in the fights.

His upcoming bout with Ricky Burns should prove more quality action when he faces the British boxer in his hometown.

No. 5: Pawel Wolak

6 of 10

Pawel Wolak (29-1, 19 KO) only recently was introduced to boxing fans when he took on former light middleweight champion Yuri Foreman in March. He stopped Foreman in the sixth round after putting on a very exciting fight that saw furious exchanges from both men.

He followed up on that fight with the best fight in 2011 versus Delvin Rodriguez. With his right eye completely shut and swollen beyond belief, he fought to a close majority draw. Only one thing can top that fight, and that's a rematch between the two.

It will go down December 3 on the undercard of the Antonio Margarito versus Miguel Cotto pay-per-view rematch.

No. 4: Giovani Segura

7 of 10

The flyweight division doesn't get the most attention from casual fans, but most know who Giovani Segura (28-1-1, 24 KO) is.

The former light flyweight champion recently moved up in weight, and it's going to get him more attention as his status grows as one of the division's hardest punchers.

With nine knockouts in his last nine fights, it's hard to ignore him. He holds 24 knockouts in 28 victories. He has also avenged his only loss and currently rides a nine-fight win streak that has put him in the top 10 pound for pound.

No. 3: Nonito Donaire

8 of 10

WBC and WBO bantamweight champion Nonito Donaire (26-1, 18 KO) might have a hard time outdoing his countryman Manny Pacquiao, but he does have a lot of similarities. One is knockout power.

His most recent victory came against Fernando Montiel in February. He knocked out one of the best boxers in the division with a vicious left hook in the second round. The punch was so devastating that it left a visible dent in Montiel's head.

His next fight will be on Saturday versus Omar Andres Narvaez, which will be broadcast on HBO.

No. 2: Brandon Rios

9 of 10

WBA lightweight champion Brandon Rios is undefeated at 28-0 and one of the fastest rising stars in boxing. It's not necessarily who he has beaten, but how he does it.

With an extensive streak of knockouts, the 25-year-old Mexican champion hasn't quite met the challenge that will push his status over the top.

It could come against the likes of Juan Manuel Marquez, but Rios is satisfied to face the best of the rest in the division and put on action fights for fans. He certainly exceeds the fans' expectations and more.

No. 1: Manny Pacquiao

10 of 10

Manny Pacquiao (53-3-2, 38 KO) isn't just a fan favorite when it comes to boxing. He is one of the most likable athletes in all of sports.

His current position as the No. 1 pound-for-pound boxer in the sport is matched with boxing's ultimate fan-favorite boxer.

Pacquiao blends excitement and skill and succeeds at the top of the sport. He has done it for years, and it has led him to defeat 14 opponents in a row, including knocking out the only man to beat him in the last decade.

His November 12 bout with Juan Manuel Marquez will be the third of their trilogy, and it's only going to add to the legacy of the Filipino icon.
