Report Card Grades for All 32 NFL Coaches after the NFL's Week 6
The grades are in!
We've already seen six weeks of the NFL season so far, so we have a nice sample size to use as we grade each team's head coach's performance.
Which coaches have passed with flying colors? For starters, Mike McCarthy could not be doing any better of a job than he's doing with his undefeated Green Bay Packers, just as Tony Sparano couldn't be doing any worse.
With that being said, how do all the other coaches in the NFL fare thus far this season?
Feel free to leave some feedback, and be sure to let your opinion be known!
Ken Whisenhunt
1 of 322011 record: 1-4
Report card grade: C-
The Arizona Cardinals simply have not had a very good season thus far, which is easy to tell from their putrid 1-4 record.
Ken Whisenhunt and the Cardinals won the first week of the season but have lost their last four games, including two key losses against the Seattle Seahawks and the Minnesota Vikings.
The Cardinals compete in the lousy NFC West, and with the San Francisco 49ers producing a 5-1 record so far this season, making the playoffs will be a big stretch for Whisenhunt and the Cards.
Mike Smith
2 of 322011 record: 3-3
Report card grade: C
Mike Smith's Atlanta Falcons have been far too inconsistent this season for a team that's loaded with talent on both sides of the ball.
Granted, the team has come up with three key victories against the Philadelphia Eagles, Seattle Seahawks and Carolina Panthers, but keep in mind that all of those teams have losing records. Atlanta's three losses all came against teams with a 3-3 or better record.
As of right now, Smith and the Falcons cannot beat teams that are in playoff contention—that's a big problem.
John Harbaugh
3 of 322011 record: 5-1
Report card grade: A-
The Baltimore Ravens could have not gotten off to a better start, and a lot of the credit should go to John Harbaugh and his coaching staff.
The Ravens are sitting pretty atop the AFC North, ahead of the hated Pittsburgh Steelers.
Baltimore's beaten up a few tough teams this season, including the Steelers, the New York Jets and the Houston Texans. However, their lone loss came against the Tennessee Titans, which is rather mind-boggling.
Chan Gailey
4 of 322011 record: 4-2
Report card grade: A
The Buffalo Bills are one of the many pleasant surprises thus far this season, as Chan Gailey has turned his once losing football team into one of the league's better teams.
Last season, the Bills were a dreadful 4-12, but they have somehow turned it around this season with a solid 4-2 start.
Buffalo has come up with key victories over the New England Patriots, Philadelphia Eagles and Oakland Raiders, which were all games that many probably thought it would lose.
Ron Rivera
5 of 322011 record: 1-5
Report card grade: B-
Surprisingly, the Carolina Panthers haven't been all that bad this season despite their 1-5 record.
Ron Rivera came into Carolina, a team that was very young but loaded with talent, and he's got the Panthers playing hard.
Carolina has been in every game this season besides last week's 31-17 loss against the Atlanta Falcons.
It certainly appears that Rivera and Cam Newton have a very bright future ahead of them.
Lovie Smith
6 of 322011 record: 3-3
Report card grade: C
The Chicago Bears have been extremely inconsistent so far this season, and most of it is thanks to their absolutely awful offensive line.
Lovie Smith's contract was recently extended for two more seasons, but a mediocre 3-3 record is not going to cut it—especially from a team that made it to the NFC title game just a year ago.
Marvin Lewis
7 of 322011 record: 4-2
Report card grade: A
Marvin Lewis gets an A? You bet.
This past offseason, the team lost its starting quarterback Carson Palmer and starting wide receivers Chad Ochocinco and Terrell Owens—but Andy Dalton and A.J. Green have certainly stepped their games up.
Lewis has done a phenomenal job so far this season, as his Cincinnati Bengals are in second place in the AFC North.
Pat Shurmur
8 of 322011 record: 2-3
Report card grade: C
Pat Shurmur's first year in Cleveland has been rather inconsistent. A 2-3 record may be decent, considering how young the Browns really are, but it's nowhere near a success.
The Browns' two victories have come against two of the league's teams without a win—the Indianapolis Colts and the Miami Dolphins.
Jason Garrett
9 of 322011 record: 2-3
Report card grade: D-
Jason Garrett hasn't quite failed, but he's borderline failing. In fact, if you've watched the Dallas Cowboys play this season, you'd find yourself scratching your head about Garrett's rather strange play-calling.
The Cowboys are an extremely talented team, and there are no excuses for why they should be 2-3 with losses against the New York Jets, Detroit Lions and New England Patriots.
John Fox
10 of 322011 record: 1-4
Report card grade: C
John Fox knew what he was getting into when he agreed to join the Denver Broncos, a team that's in the process of rebuilding.
It's kind of hard to tell how well Fox has coached so far this season, but I'll tell you one thing: In my opinion, it's definitely the right call to name Tim Tebow the starter. Now is the time to see if Tebow is the quarterback of the future.
Jim Schwartz
11 of 322011 record: 5-1
Report card grade: A+
Even if the Detroit Lions were 4-2, I'd still be awarding Jim Schwartz a perfect A+ grade.
This Detroit Lions team has tons of young talent, but it's extremely inexperienced—just take a look at its 6-10 record just a year ago.
Schwartz has turned the Lions around completely, as they appear to be a definite playoff contender and even a possible Super Bowl contender.
Mike McCarthy
12 of 322011 record: 6-0
Report card grade: A+
Let's put it this way: The Green Bay Packers are the reigning Super Bowl champions, and Mike McCarthy has his team playing light years better than the team that won it all a year ago. That's definitely saying something.
The Packers appear to be unstoppable.
Gary Kubiak
13 of 322011 record: 3-3
Report card grade: C-
The Houston Texans have the talent and potential to be the best team in the AFC South, but a mediocre 3-3 record is not going to cut it.
The Texans have lost key games to the New Orleans Saints, Oakland Raiders and Baltimore Ravens; the Saints and Raiders games the Texans could have easily won, but they fell just short.
If Gary Kubiak wants his team to be a playoff contender, he's going to have to coach it to hang with the elite teams.
Jim Caldwell
14 of 322011 record: 0-6
Report card grade: D+
It's not Jim Caldwell's fault that Peyton Manning is hurt, and it's definitely not his fault that the Colts rely so heavily on just one player.
All in all, the Colts may be 0-6, but they're still a challenging opponent every Sunday. In fact, Indianapolis' point differential is only about 9.8 points per game—not that awful.
Jack Del Rio
15 of 322011 record: 1-5
Report card grade: F
There is no reason why Jack Del Rio should be a head coach in the NFL—he's just not a very good coach.
Del Rio's Jacksonville Jaguars do not appear consistently prepared for games, as it's clear that the opposing teams are always outcoaching Del Rio's game plan.
The Jaguars may be a bad football team, but they still have young talent with potential; however, they're still showing zero signs of life.
Todd Haley
16 of 322011 record: 2-3
Report card grade: D
It has definitely been a bumpy ride for Todd Haley and the Kansas City Chiefs, as they lost their first three games and are currently on a two-game winning streak—but how long will that last?
Kansas City has definitely had its struggles this season, but a lot of that has to do with injuries to Jamaal Charles, Eric Berry, Tony Moeaki and Gabe Miller.
I'm not giving Haley any free passes, as this was a team that was in the playoffs last season.
Tony Sparano
17 of 322011 record: 0-5
Report card grade: F
The Miami Dolphins are a talented football team that is not living up its potential. A lot of that has to do with head coach Tony Sparano.
In my opinion, I wouldn't be surprised if Sparano finds himself jobless sometime before the season comes to an end.
Through six weeks of the season, there's no excuse why the Dolphins haven't recorded a win—their defense is far too talented.
Leslie Frazier
18 of 322011 record: 1-5
Report card grade: D+
The Minnesota Vikings may be rebuilding, but they still have the NFL's best running back on their roster in Adrian Peterson and still have a talented defensive unit. There's no reason why this team shouldn't have more than one win this season.
There are only two issues that I have with rookie head coach Leslie Frazier: One, he needs to bench Donovan McNabb completely; two, he needs to make sure that Peterson gets the ball far more than he is right now.
Bill Belichick
19 of 322011 record: 5-1
Report card grade: B+
Bill Belichick's defense may be one of the league's worst, but it's definitely one of the league's most bendable defenses, as they continually find ways to make key red-zone stops.
The New England Patriots' lone loss this season came against the Buffalo Bills, who are surprisingly competitive this season, but that's still no excuse.
So far it's been a successful year for Belichick and the Patriots.
Sean Payton
20 of 322011 record: 4-2
Report card grade: B
The New Orleans Saints are in second place in the NFC South, and that is inexcusable—this is a team that has the potential to make a legitimate run for a Super Bowl.
Sean Payton's Saints have lost two games this season—one against the undefeated Green Bay Packers and most recently against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, a game New Orleans should have won.
All in all, though, besides tearing his MCL and fracturing his tibia, Payton has had a solid 2011 season.
Tom Coughlin
21 of 322011 record: 4-2
Report card grade: B+
Tom Coughlin and the New York Giants have responded well to a disappointing 10-6 season with no playoff berth.
So far for the Giants, they've recorded key victories over the Philadelphia Eagles and the Buffalo Bills on their way to a 4-2 record, which is good enough for first in the NFC East.
Many believed that Coughlin was on the hot seat after last season's performance, but he's done a solid job thus far this year.
Rex Ryan
22 of 322011 record: 3-3
Report card grade: C-
There is no question about it: The New York Jets have underachieved so far this season, and they need to turn it around real fast.
Rex Ryan is too good of a coach to have a team this talented posting a 3-3 record through the first six games of the season—there's no excuse.
Hue Jackson
23 of 322011 record: 4-2
Report card grade: B+
Hue Jackson definitely has his Oakland Raiders on the right track, as they've recorded key wins over the Houston Texans and the New York Jets on their way to a 4-2 record.
For a first-year head coach, Jackson has coached his team very well—well enough to be in second place in the AFC West.
Are the Raiders contenders or pretenders? Definitely contenders.
Andy Reid
24 of 322011 record: 2-4
Report card grade: F
The Philadelphia Eagles are the "Dream Team"? Really?
Andy Reid has done an awful job thus far this season. There is no reason a team this talented on both sides of the ball should be 2-4. The Eagles should be at least 4-2 right now, not 2-4.
If Reid's Eagles don't make the playoffs this season, I have a feeling that he'll be out of work at the end of the season.
Mike Tomlin
25 of 322011 record: 4-2
Report card grade: B
For all the injuries the Pittsburgh Steelers have had to deal with this season, Mike Tomlin has done a phenomenal job.
The Steelers have had to deal with injuries to Ben Roethlisberger, Rashard Mendenhall, Willie Colon, Ryan Clark, Casey Hampton and James Harrison.
The only knock that I have on Tomlin and the Steelers is that they're only in third place in the AFC North.
Norv Turner
26 of 322011 record: 4-1
Report card grade: B+
For the first time in recent memory, Norv Turner and the San Diego Chargers actually succeeded in the NFL's first quarter of the season with a stellar 4-1 record.
The Chargers are a very talented team that should end up being the AFC West champions, as they're in first place right now, ahead of the Oakland Raiders.
Jim Harbaugh
27 of 322011 record: 5-1
Report card grade: A+
I am extremely impressed by the way Jim Harbaugh has rallied his team to an incredible 5-1 start, which is definitely good enough for first place in the NFC West.
Harbaugh came to San Fran with little talent on the roster but has definitely coached his team up, especially quarterback Alex Smith.
So far Harbaugh's very young NFL coaching career has been remarkable.
Pete Carroll
28 of 322011 record: 2-3
Report card grade: C
The Seattle Seahawks are so hard to read, as they're a weak team on paper but have shown signs of life against teams like the New York Giants and the Atlanta Falcons.
I will admit that the Seahawks roster isn't that talented, and with Tarvaris Jackson as the starting quarterback, Pete Carroll has done a nice job at turning this team into an average 2-3 football team.
Steve Spagnuolo
29 of 322011 record: 0-5
Report card grade: D-
I wouldn't go as far as calling Steve Spagnuolo a failure, but his St. Louis Rams aren't that talented, and an 0-5 record seems just about right.
Why does Spagnuolo deserve a D-? Well, Sam Bradford has taken several steps backwards as a second-year quarterback, and the entire team in general has been pitiful this season after posting an impressive 7-9 record last season.
Raheem Morris
30 of 322011 record: 4-2
Report card grade: B+
Raheem Morris has coached his Tampa Bay Buccaneers to an impressive first place in the NFC South, ahead of the New Orleans Saints and the Atlanta Falcons.
However, Morris is not deserving of an A grade, as his team suffered an embarrassing 48-3 loss against the San Francisco 49ers and a 27-20 loss against the Detroit Lions.
Mike Munchak
31 of 322011 record: 3-2
Report card grade: B+
Mike Munchak's first year as an NFL head coach could not be going any better. His Tennessee Titans are an impressive 3-2, which is good enough for first place in the AFC South. The Titans have had key victories over the Baltimore Ravens and the Cleveland Browns.
If Tennessee keeps it up, Munchak could see the playoffs in his debut as the team's head coach.
Mike Shanahan
32 of 322011 record: 3-2
Report card grade: C+
If the Washington Redskins actually had a decent quarterback, they could easily be the front-runner in the NFC East.
Mike Shanahan has done a decent job this season, but two of their three wins came against the Arizona Cardinals and the St. Louis Rams—definitely nothing to brag about.
Considering the Redskins don't have a legitimate starting quarterback but still have a winning record, I have to give Shanahan a C+ grade.
