BCS Rankings 2011: Teams Outside Top 5 Who Can Sneak into BCS Title Game

Kyle VassaloOct 17, 2011

There are undefeated teams outside the top five of the initial BCS rankings who still have a legitimate shot at outlasting the rest of the field and jumping into the national championship.

Just because these teams happen to be ranked outside the top five doesn't mean they have no shot at passing by Alabama, Boise State, LSU, Oklahoma and Oklahoma State. It's clear the national championship is going to be between two undefeated teams, but there are a number of different teams who could make up the matchup.

Here are three teams outside the top five who can still sneak into the BCS title game.

Wisconsin

No. 6-ranked Wisconsin is one of the biggest enigmas in college football. It's undefeated, it blew Nebraska out and Russell Wilson remains in the Heisman race. Nobody in the nation has scored more points per game and Wisconsin has allowed third-least amount of points in the country.

Still, somehow the Badgers are pushed to the wayside. They have a signature win to point to and one of the best quarterbacks in the country. If and when teams in the top five start slipping, Wisconsin looks like it should be able to run the table and rack up a few more wins over ranked opponents along the way, putting it in the mix for the BCS National Championship Game.

Stanford

Stanford has one game on its schedule that will inevitably determine whether or not it has a shot at the national championship. The Cardinal take on the Oregon Ducks in what will inevitably be a battle between top-10 Pac-12 juggernauts.

Andrew Luck is one of the best players in the country and a Heisman frontrunner. Stanford is ranked eighth and is being pushed out by other talented undefeated teams. Stanford could essentially run the table and still be left out in the cold, but it still has a chance to gain some momentum and establish itself as an elite team, despite its relatively easy schedules.

Clemson

Clemson came back in miraculous fashion to take down Maryland. That doesn't exactly sound like a national championship contender, but a closer look may suggest otherwise. Clemson, currently ranked No. 7, should be favored in every game it plays from here on out.

Though the Tigers have been under the radar for the entire season, they aren't sneaking up on anyone now. With Georgia Tech and South Carolina without Marcus Lattimore standing in the way, it's hard to see Clemson suffering a loss all season long.
