BCS Rankings 2011: How Controversial BCS Screwed Up in Week 8

Andrew KulhaOct 16, 2011

If it seems like the BCS rankings are screwed up ever year, it's because they usually do screw something up every year, and 2011 is no different.

Of course there are at least a few teams that are ranked obnoxiously higher than they should be, and consequently there are a whole bunch of teams that needed to be ranked higher.

Over time everything will eventually even out, but at least for the first revealing of the BCS rankings there are quite a few flaws.

Let's investigate some of the latest screw ups in the BCS rankings. First though, take a look at how they turned out:

2011 BCS Rankings:

 1 LSU .9522
 2 Alabama .9519
 3 Oklahoma .930
 4 Oklahoma State
 .857
 5 Boise State
 .803
 6 Wisconsin .771
 7 Clemson .758
 8 Stanford .748
 9 Arkansas .626
 10 Oregon .619
 11 Kansas State
 .569
 12 Virginia Tech
 .505
 13 Nebraska .497
 14 South Carolina
 .491
 15 West Virginia
 .373
 16 Michigan State
 .329
 17 Texas A&M
 .308
 18 Michigan .300
 19 Houston .286
 20 Auburn .265
 21 Penn State
 .231
 22 Georgia Tech
 .197
 23 Illinois .152
 24 Texas .135
 25 Washington .087

No. 10 Oregon:

I understand that the Ducks are hurting right now and I completely get that their first loss of the season to LSU really put them behind the eight-ball. That being said, they are still one of the most dangerous teams in the country and can score at will. I expect Oregon will close out the Pac-12, which will really give them a boost up the rankings.

No. 24 Texas:

No offense to the Longhorns, but they are not a Top 25 team. They've been soundly beaten by both Oklahoma and Oklahoma State and didn't look all to impressive. They have two games against Kansas State and Texas A&M coming up that I believe will expose their flaws as a Top 25 team.

No. 18 Michigan:

I feel the same way about Michigan as I do Texas. They were exposed by the Spartans as an average Big Ten team at best. When playing a good defense Denard Robinson shuts down and seems to be extremely injury prone. The offense is gimmicky and works great against lesser teams, but we've seen it break down time and time again against legitimate programs. I don't expect Michigan to be ranked for much longer.
