Georgia Football: Eric Taylor UGA's Future Offensive Coordinator? (Humor)

Michael ThomasOct 16, 2011

After Georgia's offense put on another less than convincing display against Vanderbilt this past Saturday, fans have intensified their cries for current offensive coordinator Mike Bobo's dismissal.  While head coach Mark Richt seems determined to keep his right hand man, I've kept my eye on several potential replacements just in case Bobo eventually receives his marching orders.

I sat down with (NBC hit series) "Friday Night Lights" star coach and UGA alumnus Eric Taylor this past week to discuss his potential interest in the position and all other things football.

You just moved all the way across the country to Philadelphia.  How have you adjusted to your new coaching job?

Well, I was hesitant about leaving Texas, but I have really come to enjoy my new coaching job.  In Texas, everyone in your town has an opinion about your performance, and they aren't afraid to share it with you.  In Philadelphia, I'm hardly the most scrutinized person in town.  Students, parents and community members all show up to the game and congratulate you when you win, but they're not constantly challenging your coaching when you lose.

How is you new team performing this season?

This year has been as much of a learning experience for me as it has been for the kids.  I pushed the kids exceptionally hard over the summer as we installed new offensive, defensive and special teams packages, and their dedication has paid off.  We're 6-2 right now, and I see no reason why we can't win every other game we play this season.

You're especially well known for developing Matt Saracen, J.D. McCoy and Vince Howard into elite quarterbacks.  Have you taken a new understudy who can carry your team to yet another state championship?

I want to start out by saying that every player on our team is integral to winning games.  The quarterback receives the most attention, but he's no more important than any of the other players who bust their butts at practice every day and on Friday nights.  With that said, we have several quarterbacks who have played exceptionally well and will continue to help us win games this year and in the future.

As a UGA alumnus, what do you think about the current state of the football program?

I definitely want to congratulate Mark Richt on collecting his 100th victory last weekend against Tennessee as this win was representative of his 11 outstanding years leading our football program.  With a 4-1 conference record so far, the Dawgs are in a great position to challenge for the SEC East title, and I am confident that Richt is the right man for the task.

You've probably heard that despite UGA's success this season, many fans are very disappointed with the offense's failure to consistently score points this season.  Your thoughts?

Most people watching football have never played before, so they don't really realize how hard it is to score, especially against very athletic SEC defenses.  However, despite facing some challenging situations, Georgia has managed to score more points than their opponent for the past five games, and that's all that really matters.

So do you think Georgia's offense is good enough to overcome Florida and Auburn?

That's a tricky question.  As coaches, we always see room for improvement, and we're constantly working to teach our guys how they can perform better.  I think most teams would struggle against Auburn and Florida, but I have complete confidence in Richt and know he will have the players well-prepared for the challenge.

What about Mike Bobo?  Is his play-calling savvy enough to deceive the Florida and Auburn defenses?

I really like Mark Richt and trust his judgment as a head coach.

Would your offensive system work for UGA's offense?

Well, I had to learn an awful lot in my brief tenure as the quarterbacks coach as TMU, and I'm sure I would have to spend a great deal of time and effort tweaking my play-calling to function at the collegiate level.

Would you continue running your offense almost exclusively through two feature backs?

Yeah, we really like using the backs in the passing game.

So would you have Isaiah Crowell and Richard Samuel running fly routes?

(laughs)I see where you're trying to go with that question, but you know that the success of my offense is tied to the unpredictability of my play-calling.  I can't give away my secrets.

So have you thought about coaching for Georgia?

I love my alma mater and would gladly help UGA in any way possible.  With that said, we've just finished settling down in Philly, and I just don't really want to move away.  The idea is quite attractive, but I'm really happy where I am right now.

Would you reconsider if the OC position became vacant in the next few months?

I'd have to talk with Tami.  We're happy where we are, but if Coach Richt and [Athletic Director Greg] McGarity came calling, I would at least need to consider the offer.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts with us Coach Taylor, and best of luck to you.

There you have it Bulldog fans: an offensive coordinator who prides himself on spontaneity and wins championships.  What more could we ask for?

Full Disclosure Note:  Coach Eric Taylor is portrayed in Friday Night Lights by Kyle Chandler who did actually attend UGA.
