Hopkins vs. Dawson Results: Chad Dawson's "Win" Another Black Eye for Boxing

Adam WellsOct 16, 2011

Chad Dawson must be a fan of mixed martial arts, and he got confused about what sport he was competing in against Bernard Hopkins on Saturday night. That is the only logical excuse for his actions in their WBC light heavyweight title fight.

In the second round, Dawson lifted Hopkins into the air and threw him onto the canvas. Hopkins' head was under the bottom ring rope and he was clutching his shoulder, which was dislocated. He was unable to continue the fight, so referee Pat Russell stopped the fight and awarded Dawson the victory via TKO.

Even the most casual boxing fan knows that you can't lift an opponent off his feet in order to gain an advantage in a fight. The fact that Dawson did should have been a foul and an immediate point deduction, or even a disqualification.

After the fight, Dawson was actually trying to defend what he did and essentially blamed Hopkins for the way everything went down.

"

"I'm sorry for the disappointment of the fans. He ran from me for three years. I knew he didn't want the fight. He keeps talking about Philly and about being a gangster. He's no gangster. Gangsters don't quit. He's weak. He's a weak physically and mentally minded person. He has no power. I was going to get on him and he knew it."

Hopkins may not be the most popular fighter in the world, but that does not mean he deserves to be screwed by his opponent or the referee. Dawson tried to obtain an advantage illegally and he should have been punished for his actions.

Russell said that it was a TKO for Dawson because Hopkins was hurt and unable to continue. That means he doesn't know the rules of boxing or he was just not paying attention to what was happening.

Richard Schaefer, Hopkins's promoter, said that they are going to file a protest challenging the ruling. The California Athletic Commission will have no choice but to deem this fight a no-contest when they hear go over this fight.

This was yet another disappointing ending to a boxing fight, and it could not have come at a worse time. Floyd Mayweather's bout with Victor Ortiz last month was marred by a controversial finish.

Boxing needs a makeover because the controversies have become more talked about than the fights themselves.
