BCS Standings 2011: Predicting the Top 5 Teams in This Year's First Poll

Austin GreenOct 16, 2011

The first Bowl Championship Series poll of the season will be released tonight and the college football world will observe as the postseason picture begins to somewhat assemble itself.

Of course, the championship picture can change drastically between now and January, but this first poll will give us a clear view of the BCS landscape before everything is final.

Here are the teams that should be in the top five when the poll is released Sunday night.

1. LSU Tigers

If the Tigers are not number one on Sunday, I will freak out.

I'm not an LSU fan (at all), but they have just been far too impressive to overlook.

They have crushed four Top 25 teams thus far (Oregon, Mississippi State, West Virginia, Florida), which is much more than any other team in the nation can say.

They are currently ranked second in the USA Today Coaches Poll, which is a minor travesty as far as I'm concerned.

The Tigers and their frightening defense should be the country's top ranked team.

2. Alabama Crimson Tide

Alabama has been absolutely killing teams this year, allowing just seven points per game (first in the nation).

Expect this trend to continue next week when they take on Tennessee, who will be without starting quarterback Tyler Bray.

The Tide have rolled over three ranked teams (Penn State, Arkansas, Florida) and should be rewarded for their strength of schedule.

3. Oklahoma Sooners

Sooners fans will likely be highly insulted by this ranking, but they really can't argue with the strength of schedule of LSU and Alabama.

Oklahoma could definitely be the best team in the nation, but until they beat more than two ranked teams, they shouldn't be ranked as such.

4. Wisconsin Badgers

The Badgers have just been destroying opponents this season, as they currently sit third in points per game (48.4) and points allowed per game (10.2)

They've only played one ranked team, which was then then eighth-ranked Nebraska.

Wisconsin put the smackdown on the Cornhuskers, beating them 48-17.

5. Clemson Tigers

That's right. Clemson.

The Tigers moved to 7-0 on Saturday after winning yet another shootout—this time against Maryland.

I'm expecting plenty of hate from Stanford, Boise State and Oklahoma State fans, but Clemson has beaten more ranked teams than all of them combined.

Debate over.
