Andrew Luck Not Amused by "Suck for Luck" Campaigns Around the NFL
Given that quarterback is the most important position in football, it's no wonder that teams like the Miami Dolphins and the Peyton Manning-deprived Indianapolis Colts have zero wins thus far.
And when you have a prospect like Stanford quarterback Andrew Luck being compared to Manning when he came out of Tennessee, well, there's a natural inclination for fans to want their going-nowhere teams to flub the rest of the season and grab the No. 1 overall pick in the 2012 NFL Draft.
Luck could be flattered by such "Suck for Luck" campaigns. But he's clearly not.
Said Luck, via The New York Times:
"“I am aware of it. A couple of guys told me about it. I think it’s stupid. Simply put.”
"
Well, don't hold anything back there, Andrew.
First off, I can understand what Luck is saying. He's a die-hard player, and like all die-hard players, he can't fathom a team tanking an entire season, no matter what the reward. It's almost an insult to tell competitive athletes to simply quit because they won't be anything without a certain prospect.
Luck understands the NFL already. He understands that it's not in a professional player's DNA (most of the time) to simply lie down and cruise to an 0-16 record. It's embarrassing for athletes to lose, embarrassing to be called out in the media, embarrassing to be called out by their fans.
But Luck should also realize this isn't going to go away. When you have a prospect like him, a whole new level of hype is brought into the fold. He's one of the most exciting quarterback prospects in years, given his ability to pretty much do anything well. Heck, he even scrambles well.
If Luck really wants these campaigns to go away, he'll start sucking.
Then again, that's not in his DNA.
