Plan B: What Happens If Kerry Collins or Brett Favre Goes Down?

Raider Card AddictDec 4, 2008

In the NFL, there are a handful of teams that defy logic. Instead of going with younger, and supposedly more talented play-callers, they have gone with the old sages, putting their futures in the hands of  wily vets.

Some have done rather well, with this logic, but it also has one wondering...if this old fellow goes down, will the backup be up to the task?

Our first subject, is pictured Kerry Collins. From Carolina, to the Saints, New York, and then Oakland, many thought it was the backup life for Kerry.

Not until he got inserted at various times, and then took the reins for the Titans this year did anyone realize how much he still has in his tank.

But, as the question goes, what happens if Collins goes down? Could Vince Young handle the duties if needed? Or is he in need of more seasoning?

Next up on the docket would be Brett Favre. After leaving the land of cheese and probably laughing at the Packers misfortune, Brett has started to look mortal on the West Coast. Losses to the Chargers, Raiders, and Broncos, and with the 49ers coming up, one has to wonder if he goes down, who will fill in?

Kellen Clemens, who played last year didn't exactly excite anyone last year, and in spot duty this season, he's got one INT in two games, with no TDs.

On to Arizona, where Kurt Warner thrives, but has had back to back stumbles. It does help that they play in the NFC West, with the Rams coming to town. But if Warner has a season-ending injury, would Matt have matured enough to lead this team to the playoffs?

And Tampa Bay, who has the recycled Jeff Garcia running things, isn't looking bad. Granted, this is a team that is more defense than offense, but if he goes down, would Luke use the Force to guide them? Or would you see a team start to fall apart, and then crash in the playoffs?

Some clubs have seen what happens when their starter QBs go out. New England, for example without Brady, is just not the same. It helps that most of the pieces are there for anyone to step into...but 7-5 is a lot worse than 12-0.

When the Bills lost Trent Edwards earlier in the season, it derailed a perfect season. Then on another injury, they were killed by the 49ers.

And of course the Vikings, who had to go to an older QB when Tarvaris Jackson ran into trouble, are right now in the thick of a playoff hunt.

It's good to have confidence in a great QB....but it's also important to have a Plan B in place, just in case things go wrong.
