Teams qualified (12): Poland (co-host), Ukraine (co-host), Germany (Group A winner), Russia (Group B winner), Italy (Group C winner), France (Group D winner), Netherlands (Group E winner), Greece (Group F winner), England (Group G winner), Denmark (Group H winner), Spain (Group I winner), Sweden (best runner-up).

Playoffs (8): Turkey (Group A runner-up), Ireland (Group B runner-up), Estonia (Group C runner-up), Bosnia-Herzegovina (Group D runner-up), Croatia (Group F runner-up), Montenegro (Group G runner-up), Portugal (Group H runner-up), Czech Republic (Group I runner-up).

Group A

Germany 3-1 Belgium

Turkey 1-0 Azerbaijan

Kazakhstan 0-0 Austria

Qualified: Germany

Playoffs: Turkey

Germany verdict: This team is scary. The Germans went a perfect 10-for-10 in qualifying. That's 10 wins in 10 matches. Only the Netherlands and Spain also entered the final day with 100 percent records. Germany's record includes a goal differential of plus-27—that's 34 goals for and seven goals against.

Tuesday's performance against Belgium was on par with Germany's overall dominance in qualifying. The hosts scored twice in the first half to take control and once in the second half to kill off the match. The first goal was a gorgeous strike from Mesut Özil. The second was a lightning-fast counter-attack.

This team can score. It can defend. It can counter. It has a balance of experience and youth. Watch out.

Turkey verdict: Turkey needed Tuesday's win to qualify. In fact, if Belgium had beaten Germany, Turkey could not have qualified at all. Nonetheless, this is a talented team.

Turkey is always hard to predict. In 2002 they made it all the way to the World Cup semifinals with a squad few thought could get that far. The team's performance in next year's finals might depend on who they draw in the group stages.

Group B

Republic of Ireland 2-1 Armenia

Macedonia 1-1 Slovakia

Russia 6-0 Andorra

Qualified: Russia

Playoffs: Ireland

Russia verdict: Automatic qualification was all but a formality. The Russians needed a win Tuesday, but their opponent was Andorra, which finished qualification without a single victory. Russia finished strong with only one loss—last year at home to Slovakia—in qualifying, beating out strong sides in Ireland, Armenia and Slovakia.

Ireland verdict: Needing a point to ensure a spot in the playoffs, Ireland got it with a nervy performance against surprising Armenia, which still had a chance to qualify on the last day. The Irish now head to the playoffs, where they'll look to vanquish the demons of their 2010 World Cup playoff against France.

Group C

Italy 3-0 Northern Ireland

Slovenia 1-0 Serbia

Qualified: Italy

Playoffs: Estonia

Italy verdict: Yawn. This was an easy qualification group. The Italians breezed through it.

Estonia verdict: Tiny Estonia squeaked into the playoffs thanks to Serbia's 1-0 loss at Slovenia. Had Serbia won, it would have advanced. Estonia has never qualified for the World Cup or European Championship.

Group D

Albania 1-1 Romania

France 1-1 Bosnia-Herzegovina

Qualified: France

Playoffs: Bosnia-Herzegovina

France verdict: Whew. Les Bleus trailed Bosnia-Herzegovina 1-0 in Tuesday's winner-take-all match after a 40th-minute strike by Edin Dzeko. Samir Nasri scored the equalizer—and sealed qualification—with a clutch 78th-minute penalty. Lots of regulars were missing through injury, but France must improve if it hopes to improve on its embarrassing 2010 World Cup performance.

Bosnia-Herzegovina verdict: After coming so close, they have to be disappointed. But they'll also fancy their chances in the playoffs. Dzeko is a solid player to build a team around.

Group E

Hungary 0-0 Finland

Moldova 4-0 San Marino

Sweden 3-2 Netherlands

Qualified: Netherlands

Also qualified: Sweden

Netherlands verdict: The Dutch entered the last day of qualifying as one of three sides with 100 percent records. A 3-2 loss in Stockholm doesn't change the fact that this is a great team. After last year's run to the World Cup final, it looks like the Oranje are picking up right where they left off. Expect a deep run in next year's finals.

Sweden verdict: Sweden needed a win Tuesday to clinch a trip to the finals as qualifying's best runner-up. They got it with a come-from-behind effort, winning what must have been an exciting match 3-2. I wish it had been on American TV. The Swedes almost always perform well in major tournaments. Next summer should prove no different.

Group F

Croatia 2-0 Latvia

Georgia 1-2 Greece

Malta 0-2 Israel

Qualified: Greece

Playoffs: Croatia

Greece verdict: The 2004 winners are back, and they're playing the same style of grind-it-out football. On Tuesday, needing a win to ensure direct qualification, the Greeks fell behind to an 18th minute goal before grinding out two tallies late in the second half.

Croatia verdict: Croatia had a chance to finish as group winner if Greece stumbled. Still, it took two second-half goals to see off Latvia, which was already out. Eduardo provides a dangerous attacking option, but the Croats will have to improve next summer.

Group G

Bulgaria 0-1 Wales

Switzerland 2-0 Montenegro

Qualified: England (did not play Tuesday)

Playoffs: Montenegro

England verdict: The Three Lions qualified comfortably without losing a match, but they didn't always play convincingly. Star striker Wayne Rooney picked up a silly straight red in Friday's match, so he could miss matches in next summer's finals. Without him, England could struggle—or find a new style.

Montenegro verdict: Montenegro is a surprise qualifier for the playoffs, beating out Switzerland. If they can get through the playoffs, this might be a trendy dark-horse pick.

Group H

Denmark 2-1 Portugal

Norway 3-1 Cyprus

Qualified: Denmark

Playoffs: Portugal

Denmark verdict: Direct qualification ahead of Portugal has to be seen as a coup. The Danes regularly qualify for tournaments but Portugal is an impressive scalp. Look for them to post their usual middle-of-the-pack performance next summer, though.

Portugal verdict: Disappointment. They'll still be considered among the favorites to qualify through the playoffs, but with all that talent, this team should have done better. They actually finished level on points with Norway but move on thanks to goal differential.

Group I

Lithuania 1-4 Czech Republic

Spain 3-1 Scotland

Qualified: Spain

Playoffs: Czech Republic

Spain verdict: What can we say? This is the world's best team. They'll still be the team to beat in next summer's finals after breezing through qualifying with a 100 percent record. Back-to-back titles are a definite possibility.

Czech Republic verdict: The Czechs left it late but ended up qualifying with relative ease. They needed a win on the final day—and a Spanish win over Scotland—to ensure qualification. In the end, that was always going to happen.
