NFL Power Rankings: Miami Dolphins Must Continue to Suck for Luck

T.J. McaloonOct 10, 2011

Can you hear the chant coming from South Beach in Miami, Florida? That chant coming from the dwindling Dolphins fans at Sun Life Stadium is “Suck for Luck...Suck for Luck.”

It’s an odd thing for fans to be hoping for their professional football team to openly lose so that their team can finish either 0-16, 1-15 or 2-14. But will that be enough for this Dolphins franchise to draft Andrew Luck as their quarterback?

More importantly, will the Dolphins make the obvious choice in drafting the senior from Stanford?

After the 1983 draft when Dolphins selected Dan Marino from the University of Pittsburgh, history has shown they will pass on quarterbacks.

In the 2005 offseason, the Dolphins were looking at two quarterbacks that both had major surgery that year. They ended up passing on free agent Drew Brees because they thought that his surgically repaired shoulder was going to be an issue. Instead, they traded for Minnesota’s Daunte Culpepper coming off a major surgery to his knee.

Brees won a Super Bowl with New Orleans, while Culpepper is now out of the league.

Swing and a miss. Strike one.

In the 2008 NFL draft, the Dolphins had the No. 1 pick. With Boston College’s Matt Ryan as the best quarterback in the draft, it looked like a no-brainer. During the previous 1-15 season, the Miami team had used a combination of John Beck, Trent Green, Cleo Lemon and Casey Bramlet as their quarterbacks.

Instead of selecting Ryan, the Dolphins took offensive tackle, Jake Long, opting to draft quarterback Chad Henne in the second round.

Matt Ryan is now one of the best quarterbacks in the league, leading Atlanta to two playoff appearances in three years. Chad Henne has led the Dolphins to zero playoff appearances in three years.

Swing and a miss. Strike two.

Now, with their starting quarterback, Chad Henne, out for the year with a shoulder injury, it looks as if the Dolphins will once again be in that top spot in the draft. Again, the Dolphins will have a chance to draft a quarterback that could turn their franchise around. Will the Dolphins pass on Luck and stick with Henne, thus taking the risk of watching Luck lead a team like the Cardinals, Colts or Broncos to a Super Bowl?

If they do, it will be strike three for the Dolphins, and the fans will be out of support for this team.
