Chicago Marathon 2011 Results: Amber Miller Finishes Race While in Labor
You are going to feel lazy after reading this story. I don't care how productive or busy you were on Sunday—you have nothing on Amber Miller.
All Miller did on Sunday was run and a finish a marathon—and then give birth to a baby.
That completely blows my mind.
When people ask me two things I would never want to do, I quickly go to my stock answers of running a marathon and giving birth. Those are just two items on the daily to-do list for Miller.
I can see her sitting at her table in the morning, looking at her agenda.
"Let's see. Volunteer at children's hospital at 4 a.m.," she says. "Create new green energy source at 6 a.m. Run marathon at 7 a.m. Hmm, I'm going to have to finish that jog in less than two-and-a-half hours because I have to give birth at 9:30 a.m. And I'll have to finish giving birth in one hour because I have to usher in world peace at 10:30 a.m."
Anyway, you get the idea. This woman is completely amazing.
According to WGN (h/t Deadspin), Miller's doctor gave her the okay for the marathon on one condition. She could run the first half, but she had to walk the second.
How did they arrive at this decision? "Yes, it is clearly okay to run 13.1 miles, but anything beyond that you are pushing it?"
Certainly there is not a wealth of stats to prove this. "You know, extensive studies show that women who are 39 weeks pregnant run the risk of complications past that tricky 13-mile mark."
Miller's beautiful baby helped her stick to her tight schedule by beginning the birth process before the race was over. Deadspin tells us that Miller finished the last three miles with the baby in the birth canal.
Simply amazing.
