TCU Big 12: Conference Still Far from Being Great

Eric BowmanOct 10, 2011

The TCU Horned Frogs are expected to join the Big 12 on Monday, but this addition doesn't mean the conference must stop expansion.

The Big 12 is still far from being where they once where, which is why they must add more teams to boost their credibility.

It's tough to say if the Big 12 will ever be great again because of who they've lost compared to who they've added so far.

Don't get me wrong, the Big 12 is a good conference, but they used to dominate college football. The SEC has since taken over the reigns; the Big 12 has now fallen to perhaps the third or fourth best conference in the country.

Remember now that the Big 12 was more than likely days away from collapsing completely, but they were able to add TCU.

There's still talk that others might leave, which is also why the conference needs to continue to work on expansion.

TCU is a good program that will certainly get better in the Big 12, but this year they are clearly not the team they once were. That happens when you deal with a ton of offensive changes, especially at quarterback.

The Horned Frogs help the Big 12, but they're no savior by any means. Oklahoma, Texas and now Oklahoma State keep the Big 12 a good conference, but you need more than three solid teams paired with mediocre programs in order to be great.

The Big 12 is looking at BYU, Louisville and West Virginia according to ESPN, but only the Mountaineers would be a solid addition.

Sure, the other schools help, but in terms of truly strengthening the conference, West Virginia is the only school that makes the most sense. Unfortunately, West Virginia doesn't make sense geographically, which could be a problem.

In the end, the Big 12 is very likely to get back to 12 teams because they know they really need to. It would be in the best interest of the conference if it added two more teams, or three if Missouri were to leave.

The journey for the Big 12 to become great once again cannot end with TCU, otherwise the conference will fall into the middle of the pack and struggle to make the most money they possibly could. After all, isn't that what college sports has turned into: who can make the most money?
