BCS Standings 2011: Clemson and 3 Teams BCS Will Rank Higher Than AP Voters

Tim DanielsOct 10, 2011

The first set of Bowl Championship Series rankings will be released next weekend. It's always an intriguing time because nobody is completely sure how the computers will rank teams as compared its human counterparts. Here are three teams the BCS might like more than voters for the AP Top 25.

No. 8 Clemson Tigers

Clemson has already knocked off three ranked opponents, including back-to-back wins over Florida State and Virginia Tech when both teams were ranked No. 11. The other win was against Auburn. Those wins are more impressive than anything on the résumé of Stanford or Boise State.

The Tigers are led by quarterback Tajh Boyd, who was carted off the field against Maryland, but is expected to be ready for next weekend's game against Maryland. Boyd has thrown 14 touchdowns and just two interceptions through six games.

Clemson's biggest worry moving forward will be its run defense. The Tigers are allowing more than 160 yards per game on the ground and still have Georgia Tech's unmatched option attack and Marcus Lattimore left on the schedule. That area of the game must improve and quick.

Remaining roadblocks: Oct. 29 at Georgia Tech, Nov. 26 at South Carolina, ACC championship game.

No. 10 Arkansas Razorbacks

Even though Arkansas got crushed by Alabama on the road, it has bounced back strong with consecutive victories over ranked opponents. And since the BCS doesn't factor in margin of victory, the Razorbacks' loss to Alabama won't appear so bad.

Quarterback Tyler Wilson and wide out Jarius Wright have been on the same page all season. The pair has connected for five touchdowns and nearly 500 yards already. Wright's worse game came against Alabama, which is not a coincidence.

Like Clemson, Arkansas' biggest weakness is its defense. The Razorbacks rank in SEC's bottom-third against both the run and the pass. They are giving up more than 22 points per game and that number jumps to 27 PPG if you remove cupcakes Missouri State and New Mexico.

Remaining roadblocks: Nov. 5 vs. South Carolina, Nov. 25 at LSU, SEC championship game (if applicable).

No. 17 Kansas State Wildcats

Kansas State is one of the nation's most surprising teams so far. They stand at 5-0 and have a statement victory over then No. 15 Baylor. They still have four ranked teams left on the schedule though, so they'll have more than enough chances to prove they're for real.

The Wildcats are led by dual-threat quarterback Collin Klein, who has nearly as many yards on the ground as he does through the air. In all, he has totaled 904 yards and 10 touchdowns in five weeks. He's one of the most important players to any unit in college football.

The defense ranks 17th in America at less than 17 points per game and held Missouri to a season-low 17 points on Saturday. The Wildcats will need that group to step up in a big way during late October and early November when they face four straight currently ranked schools.

Remaining roadblocks: Oct. 29 vs. Oklahoma, Nov. 5 at Oklahoma State, Nov. 12 vs. Texas A&M.
