USA Today Poll Week 7: What's a Realistic Finish for No. 10 Michigan?

Jim SullivanOct 9, 2011

The Wolverines have jumped into the top 10 in the polls, ranking the second highest B1G school. Michigan boasts an undefeated record of 6-0 (2-0), which is very impressive so far this season.

Last season, this was about the time they started to fall apart. Denard Robinson dropped out of the Heisman race and they finished the season with a crushing loss to Mississippi State in the Gator Bowl, losing 52-14.

This season, they look like they can change their fortunes. With quality wins over Notre Dame, Minnesota and Northwestern, Michigan is putting themselves in place to win the B1G.

Ranked 10 in the nation, the Wolverines are performing well in the rushing game, ranked seventh with 273 yards per game, and holding opposing offenses to a minimal amount of points, ranked second in points against at 10 points allowed per game.

Can Michigan finish the season out strong and win the Legends Division as well as possibly the B1G? They certainly have the potential.

The Spartans are a tough team and just got back to being ranked. Last year, they were a force to be reckoned with, but this year, not everything has clicked.

Undefeated Michigan visits East Lansing to face their in-state rivals in a clash that should be quick and easy for the Wolverines. Michigan's powerful offense should roll over the Spartans defense. Denard Robinson and company will make amends for last year's loss at the Big House.

Wolverines take it, 42-14.

Record: 7-0 (2-0)

Purdue at 10 Michigan

2 of 8

Purdue is one of the weakest B1G opponents Michigan faces all season. The Boilermakers have trouble keeping offenses out of the end zone, and although they score quite a lot, their only wins are against cupcake teams like Rice and Southeast Missouri State.

Expect Michigan to roll over Purdue at home, 56-10.

Record: 8-0 (4-0)

10 Michigan at Iowa

3 of 8

Iowa had a lot of trouble yesterday against Penn State. Their only quality win is over Pittsburgh at home, and they own up to a loss against a weak Iowa State team.

Even though Michigan will be visiting Iowa City, the Wolverines should have no problem putting the Hawkeyes away early and cruising from there.

The W is theirs, 38-3.

Record: 9-0 (5-0)

10 Michigan at 15 Illinois

The No. 15 Fighting Illini provide a real road test for the Wolverines. Zook has morphed this team into a weapon, but Michigan's defense will show the Illinois offense how to play.

Visiting Champaign won't make this match up any easier. The only road win so far this year is at Northwestern, which is nothing to be impressed with.

If the Denard Robinson and his offense can perform like that have been, this will be an easy win. If not, it'll be a nail biter.

Michigan pulls it out in a close one, 24-21.

Record: 10-0 (6-0)

14 Nebraska at 10 Michigan

5 of 8

The Huskers come to the Big House to face the Wolverines late this season. Michigan needs to welcome their new B1G friend with a lot of noise and some hard hitting.

Both teams will be closely matched and Taylor Martinez is dangerous, but Denard Robinson is too talented to let his 10-0 lose at home.

Wolverines win in double overtime, 42-38.

Record: 11-0 (7-0)

Ohio State at 10 Michigan

6 of 8

The Buckeyes come to finish out the season for the Wolverines. The Big House shows just how big it can be with a sold out crowd, and Denard Robinson open the flood gates on Ohio State.

Michigan shows up their weaker rival at home, finishing the game 45-21.

Record: 12-0 (8-0)

10 Michigan at 4 Wisconsin

7 of 8

Wisconsin and Michigan stand very close in the rankings the whole year, and these two meet in a match of the undefeated at Lucas Oil Stadium. The B1G Championship is a huge game, and the winner receives an invitation to the Rose Bowl.

The Wisconsin offense, as consistent as it has been all year, continues its pummeling of B1G teams. Michigan's defense has a lot of trouble containing the powerful and versatile Badger offense, allowing over 30 points.

Denard Robinson plays amazingly well, but the the rest of the offense is shut down and the Wolverines fall in Indianapolis, 35-24.

Record: 12-1 (8-1)

Final Record and Bowl Placement

8 of 8

Michigan finishes the regular season with a 12-1 (8-1) record, taking the Legends Division title and losing the first B1G to a powerful Wisconsin team.

Still residing in the top 10 of the nation, the Wolverines receive a BCS at-large bid to play in the Orange Bowl against the ACC Champion.
