NFL Predictions Week 5: Curtis Painter and 3 Other QBs Guaranteed to Fail

Mike FosterOct 9, 2011

It's still hard to believe "inept passing game" and "Indianapolis Colts" can be uttered in correlation, but that's the current case right now for the Colts.

Indianapolis, without former MVP quarterback Peyton Manning, has seen just how vital their star quarterback has been to their offense and team for the past decade.

The Colts are sitting at 0-4 overall and will have their third shot at trying to win a home game when they take on the struggling Chiefs today.

Curtis Painter is expected to lead the charge for the blue. If you don't know who Painter is, he was a pretty solid quarterback for the local Purdue Boilermakers just a few years ago. Painter also is considered a third-string quarterback in the NFL, though, and nothing more.

Let's get real. Indianapolis' management never had a backup plan for losing Peyton Manning. When you've got a quarterback that's done what he has done, and stayed as healthy as he has, it becomes a complete oversight.

Now they're in a heap of trouble. Painter's statistics so far are 18-of-41 passing for two touchdowns and zero interceptions.

Sure, it's nice to see a guy who's at least protected the ball. But Painter just doesn't have what it takes to succeed this quickly. I'm not saying he's a bad quarterback. He has upside, but he's not going to be even half of what Peyton Manning—or any top starting quarterback—can be for his offense.

I'm also still not sold on Tarvaris Jackson and the Seahawks offense.

Their passing game has shown some improvements, but they still only showed up for a half last week, at home, against a pretty bad Falcons passing defense.

Jackson and his lone star receiver, Sidney Rice, take on the Giants in the Meadowlands today. The Seahawks entered week one with what most pundits thought was the most underwhelming offense in the NFL.

That might ring true and more evident than ever when they get done in New Jersey today.

If you're looking for other guys that are guaranteed to fall flat, look no further than Tennessee's Matt Hasselbeck and Denver's Kyle Orton.

Hasselbeck and Orton face top-five passing defenses in the Steelers and Chargers, respectively.

Here are the quarterbacks that are going to fail today:

Curtis Painter, Indianapolis Colts

Tarvaris Jackson, Seattle Seahawks

Matt Hasselbeck, Tennessee Titans

Kyle Orton, Denver Broncos
