UFC 136 Results: Frankie Edgar Leaves No Doubt with TKO of Gray Maynard
Frankie Edgar and Gray Maynard first met at a UFC Fight Night in April of 2008.
Little did they know then that their bout would be the first of three grueling fights and ultimately fall into the record books as arguably the best lightweight rivalry in UFC history.
It was Maynard who came out on top via unanimous decision as Edgar received the first loss of his career.
Edgar got his rematch when he entered the Octagon at UFC 125 in Las Vegas in what would eventually go down as one of the best fights ever.
After five mouth-shattering rounds, Edgar and Maynard went to the judge's scorecards for a decision. They read "48-46 Maynard, 48-46 Edgar, and 47-47," declaring the bout a draw.
While Edgar remained UFC's lightweight champion, he had yet to revenge the only loss of his career.
But, because of their electrifying fight that had fans across the globe tuning in, Edgar and Maynard were told by President Dana White that they would meet once again at UFC 136.
As action began, it was Maynard who took control early, landing huge strikes to the chin of Edgar.
Edgar was hurt, with blood pouring out of him, but—somehow, someway—managed to escape Round 1 alive.
When action picked back up, it was Edgar's turn to put the critics on the back-burner.
Able to steal Rounds 2 and 3, Edgar headed to a crucial fourth round.
Maynard appeared to have died down and was no match for Edgar's speed, aggression and conditioning.
After a huge right hook, Maynard was on the ground as Edgar began pounding away. Edgar left no doubt that he was the better fighter as the bout was stopped at 3:54 of the fourth round.
Edgar remained the UFC lightweight champion and proved to the world he's here to stay.
