UFC 136 Results: Frankie Edgar Stops "The Bully," Proves Size Doesn't Matter
It took three outings, but Frankie Edgar finally had an answer for Gray Maynard at UFC 136.
In front of thousands of screaming fans at the Toyota Center in Houston, Texas, Edgar stopped "The Bully" in stunning fashion at 3:54 of the fourth round.
"Maybe I just wanted to make it exciting. Who knows?" Edgar joked with UFC commentator Joe Rogan after the bout.
There were some eerie similarities in the rubber match to the classic encounter between the two lightweight rivals at UFC 125.
Maynard opened up strong, blasting Edgar on the feet with hard uppercuts. Edgar was in survival mode for most of the first round. As Edgar wobbled around, Maynard was more patient in his attack. He held back on being overzealous in trying to finish and blowing all of his energy early.
After the first round, a bloodied Edgar hobbled back to his corner and shook off the cobwebs from Maynard's handiwork.
As Edgar stood up for the second round, there was a certain aura in the air.
Could it happen again? Can Frankie get back into this fight?
The answer was a resounding yes, as the tide changed dramatically for the reigning lightweight champion. Edgar began to find his range and pick Maynard apart with quick combinations.
Despite being the bigger fighter, Maynard had no answer for Edgar's speed and accuracy.
Edgar stayed on the outside, sifted through Maynard's power punches and unloaded with combinations. Maynard seemed stunned as the fight continued into the championship rounds. He wasn't just losing the exchanges, but it was getting to a point where he couldn't even land on Edgar.
As shown in his wins over B.J. Penn, Edgar is one of the best in the world at slipping punches while pressing forward.
After the last bout ended in a draw, this rematch has been months in the making. The entire lightweight division has basically been at a standstill, waiting on some form of an outcome between Edgar and Maynard.
The standstill came to a convincing conclusion in the fourth round. After dropping Maynard with a hard right hand, Edgar swarmed on the lightweight contender with a barrage of ground strikes and picked up the TKO stoppage.
"I saw him rocked, and I just went in for the kill," Edgar said.
With the win, Edgar wraps up one of the most exciting rivalries in the lightweight division and moves on to the next challenge.
Unless the UFC goes with the winner of Ben Henderson and Clay Guida, Edgar could be in for a champion versus champion showdown with Strikeforce lightweight king Gilbert Melendez.
At the post-fight press conference for UFC on Versus 6, UFC President Dana White stated the UFC is currently in negotiations with Melendez and his camp, and the promotion is looking to bring the Strikeforce champ over "ASAP."
