West Virginia Football: Winners and Losers from WVU's Win Against Connecticut

Katie DayOct 8, 2011

West Virginia pulled off another win this week, proving that the Mountaineers are still a strong dominating ranked team in the Big East. It was a slow start for WVU before they blew out Connecticut for their first conference win of the season.

So who were the winners and losers from the Mountaineers in this game against UConn?

Loser: Ivan McCartney

1 of 6

While Ivan McCartney caught some good passes from Geno Smith, he only caught six passes.  As a sophomore, there shouldn’t be any excuse to have a lot of drop passes. He has room for improvement.

In this game he averaged 22 yards per catch—imagine how much his yardage total would have been if he had caught the others.

Winner: Jewone Snow

2 of 6

For a freshman, Jewone Snow did well in this game. He carried an interception 83 yards and sparked up WVU momentum. He also did his part in aiding Bruce Irvin in sacking Johnny McEntee, UCONN quarterback, for a safety.

Loser: Offensive Team; 1st Half

3 of 6

The offensive tried too hard in the first half and kept making many uncharacteristic mistakes. The only good play that came out from the offense in the first half was the 44 yard pass to Ivan McCartney. Nothing clicked for them after that...until the second half.

Winner: Defensive Team

4 of 6

The defense started off slow like the offense but they managed to keep UCONN’s points low by only allowing field goals. In the second half, their confidence rose as they forced an interception and safety. All together they totaled up 5 sacks. They didn’t allow UCONN any points in the second half.

Loser: Dustin Garrison

5 of 6

Dustin Garrison was a small disappointment in this game when last week he ran for 291 yards. Against UCONN, he only ran for 80 yards on 18 carries. At least he got a 14 yard running TD.

Winner: Geno Smith

6 of 6

Geno Smith’s amazing arm racked up West Virginia’s scoreboard against UCONN.With a slow first half, Smith and the offensive line’s dynamic changed for the better. He threw for 450 yards and four TDs while completing 27 of 45 passes.
